Background
Dort A. Cameron III was born January 28, 1945, in Batavia, New York. He graduated from Middlebury College in 1967 with a degree in political science and earned an MBA from Boston University in 1969. After brief early stints at U.S. Trust Company of New York and Salomon Brothers, he joined Drexel Burnham Lambert, where he worked from 1971 to 1984 and helped establish the firm's High Yield Bond Department — placing him among the pioneers of the high-yield ("junk bond") market alongside Drexel's high-yield franchise.
In 1984 he co-founded Investment Limited Partnership (ILP) to manage a large pool of capital over roughly ten years on behalf of the Equitable Life Insurance Company and the Bass Brothers; ILP deployed in excess of $1.2 billion across fixed income and equity, focused on high-yield securities, structured transactions, and select direct equity investments. In 1988 he formed the Airlie Group to manage a successor fund to ILP. From 1993 to 2000 he also purchased, restructured, and served as majority owner and chairman of Entex Information Services before selling it to Siemens.
In 2003 he founded Airlie Opportunity Capital Management (AOCM), serving as Chief Investment Officer/Managing Partner and overseeing a family of credit-related funds and managed accounts investing in high yield, bank debt, mezzanine securities, and private equity, from 2003 to 2017. He accumulated more than 35 years of investment banking, merchant banking, and investment-management experience spanning institutional portfolio management, alternative and principal investing, fiduciary oversight, private equity, and distressed investing. From 2017 onward he primarily invested his own capital and advised and mentored other entrepreneurs and managers — including participation in networks such as LLEX Partners' direct-investment community — and served as an independent director of Wright Investors' Service Holdings, Inc.
Beyond investing, Cameron was a longtime and influential trustee of Middlebury College: an alumni, term, and charter trustee across 15 years on the board (plus 27 years as trustee emeritus), and chair of the Investment Committee from 1993 to 1998, credited by peers with substantially growing the College's endowment.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Core expertise was credit: high-yield bonds, bank/leveraged loans, mezzanine, and distressed/special-situations debt — a discipline he helped build from Drexel's earliest high-yield days.
- Layered in private equity and select direct equity investments, often through structured transactions and control/restructuring situations (e.g., buying and turning around Entex before its sale to Siemens).
- Ran institutional pools of capital for sophisticated LPs (Equitable Life, the Bass Brothers), emphasizing fiduciary oversight and principal investing rather than venture-style seed betting.
- In his later years, shifted toward direct personal investing and advisory/mentorship, backing and helping grow businesses run by entrepreneurs and independent sponsors.
- Note: aggregator/startup databases that tag him as an "angel / seed-round" investor appear to over-index on this later direct-investing phase; his verified track record is dominated by credit and private equity, not conventional seed financing.
Notable Investments
- Entex Information Services — IT products/services firm he purchased and restructured (1993–2000) as majority owner and chairman; sold to Siemens.
- Investment Limited Partnership (ILP) — the >$1.2B vehicle he co-founded (1984) for Equitable Life and the Bass Brothers, investing in high yield, structured transactions, and direct equity.
- Airlie Group / Airlie Opportunity Capital Management funds — successor credit and private-equity funds and managed accounts he founded and led (1988; AOCM from 2003).
- Wright Investors' Service Holdings, Inc. — served as an independent director (board role rather than a startup investment).
- *(Specific seed-stage startup deals were not verifiable in public sources; his documented investing was in the funds and companies above.)*
