Background
Doug Degn spent the bulk of his career at Walmart, joining the company in 1983 as a pharmacist and rising through leadership roles across pharmacy operations, systems, specialty groups, and merchandising. He ultimately served as Executive Vice President of Food, Consumables and Hardlines Merchandising and sat on Walmart's Executive Committee, overseeing some of the retailer's largest merchandising categories before retiring in 2007. In 1997 he was recognized as the Sam M. Walton Entrepreneur of the Year. He holds a BS in Pharmacy from the University of Kansas.
His roughly 32 years of operating experience span retail, consumer packaged goods, healthcare, and pharmacy, and gave him deep relationships with senior executives across CPG, electronics, food, consumables, and general merchandise — along with access to the broad supplier community that surrounds a major retailer.
Degn co-founded NewRoad Capital Partners, a Northwest Arkansas–based growth-equity firm (founded 2013) that invests in supply chain & logistics, retail/CPG technology, and marketing technology. He has transitioned from an active Partner role to Co-Founder & Strategic Advisor, and has represented the firm on the boards of portfolio companies including Engage3 and NOWDiagnostics.
NewRoad is deliberately "operator-led," pairing capital with hands-on operational support drawn from its team's collective operating experience — a model that reflects Degn's own background as a large-scale merchant and operator rather than a traditional financier.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through NewRoad Capital Partners in growth-stage companies that already have proven product-market fit and are ready to "catalyze rapid growth" — not pre-revenue or pre-product startups.
- Initial check size roughly $5M–$20M, with active board representation and hands-on operator support.
- Three core sectors: Supply Chain & Logistics, Retail Tech / CPG Tech, and Marketing Technology.
- Looks for demand-driven businesses addressing real, unmet market needs, with a durable competitive advantage ("unfair right to win") and alignment to themes like hyperautomation, AI/automation, and customer experience.
- Degn's personal edge is retail and merchandising operating experience — he brings supplier relationships and category expertise from running Walmart's largest merchandising divisions.
- His stated personal ethos: *"Be humble. A lot was accomplished before you were born."*
