Background

Douglas G. Bergeron is a technology executive and investor best known for leading VeriFone. In 2001, he led the acquisition of VeriFone from Hewlett-Packard with The Gores Group and became CEO; in 2002 he partnered with GTCR to acquire the company from Gores. Public filings and company biographies state that VeriFone grew from under $300 million in annual sales to more than $2 billion by 2013, with enterprise value exceeding $4 billion to $5 billion during his tenure.

Before VeriFone, Bergeron held senior roles at SunGard Data Systems from 1990 to 1999, including Managing Director of SunGard Capital Markets North America, President of SunGard Futures Systems, and Group CEO of SunGard Brokerage Systems Group. He earned an Honours B.A. in Computer Science from York University in 1983 and an M.S. in Systems Management from the University of Southern California in 1987; York awarded him an honorary Doctor of Laws in 2013.

After VeriFone, Bergeron built DGB Investments, described in public filings as a diversified holding company of technology investments. He co-founded Opus Global Holdings with GTCR in 2013, with up to $500 million of equity commitments to pursue financial technology and compliance assets. He later became a founding CEO Partner and Managing Partner at Hudson Executive Capital, where he was associated with investments including Cantaloupe and Cardtronics.

Bergeron joined the board of USA Technologies, later Cantaloupe, in April 2020 and became Chairman. Cantaloupe entered into a definitive agreement in June 2025 to be acquired by 365 Retail Markets in an all-cash transaction valued at approximately $848 million; the transaction closed in May 2026. 365 Retail Markets now lists Bergeron on its board of directors.
