Background
Douglas (Doug) Schrier is a Managing General Partner at Rembrandt Venture Partners, a Menlo Park–based venture capital firm founded in 2004 that provides growth capital to emerging technology companies. He joined Rembrandt in late 2005, where he led the firm's effort to establish a base of institutional limited partners to fund its investments. Across his career he has been involved in funding, building, and operating technology companies for more than 25 years, as an entrepreneur, operator, consultant, and investor.
Before Rembrandt, Schrier was a Senior Partner at Argo Global Capital in Boston from 2001 to late 2005. Earlier, he was Senior Vice President for Acquisitions and Strategic Ventures at SAIC, a Fortune 250 technology company in La Jolla, California, where he led M&A activity. He was also Co-Founder, COO, and CFO of Multum Information Services and President of Ceon Corporation, two companies through which he collectively raised over $75 million in venture capital. His early career included associate-level roles in venture capital and corporate finance at Salomon Brothers and Prudential-Bache.
Over his investing career, Schrier reports having led investments totaling nearly $300 million across 41 software companies, serving on the board of most of them. That track record includes 5 successful IPOs and 19 acquisitions by leading technology companies — among them Citrix, Ciena, Tekelec, SAP, VMware, and Amdocs — producing proceeds of roughly $1 billion.
Schrier holds an MBA from Columbia Business School (1990) and an undergraduate degree in Economics/Pre-Med from DePauw University (1987).
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Rembrandt Venture Partners, which describes its mandate as "growth capital for emerging technology companies."
- Core sectors: enterprise software / SaaS, security, and DevOps, with broader interest in big data and technology/media/telecom.
- Backs companies across seed, early, growth, and later stages, typically emphasizing emerging companies with demonstrated product and commercial traction rather than pure concept-stage bets.
- Firm-level track record cited as a screen for fit: 100+ investments, ~$500M under management, 18 IPOs and 52 M&A exits; as of 2024 the portfolio collectively employed 5,000+ people and surpassed $1.1B in annual recurring revenue.
- Schrier personally emphasizes operating and transactional depth — he favors situations where his experience starting, running, and selling software companies (and leading corporate M&A) adds value at the board level.
