Background

Dr. Philipp Hufenbecher is a Managing Partner and co-founder of Kapius GmbH, a Hamburg-based private investment firm he established in early 2018 (registered 16 January 2018, Amtsgericht Hamburg, HRB 149741) together with Dr. Kai Kunze. Kapius deploys the private capital of experienced entrepreneurs into mid-sized German companies with a long-term (non-fund, "permanent capital") orientation.

Before founding Kapius, Hufenbecher spent roughly eight years as Managing Director leading the corporate shareholdings / Beteiligungen division of Peter Möhrle Holding, the Hamburg family office of entrepreneur Peter Möhrle (of the former Max Bahr DIY chain), where he expanded the portfolio of medium-sized holdings. His former association with that office explains the "[hidden]" contact still attached to his name. Earlier, he led the Mergers & Acquisitions / Business Development unit for Europe at SIG plc, a London-listed building-materials distributor with turnover exceeding £3 billion, and began his career at the strategy consultancy Bain & Company.

Academically, he studied industrial engineering (Wirtschaftsingenieurwesen) at the University of Kaiserslautern and earned a doctorate in strategic management, with research based in Munich (Universität der Bundeswehr München) and New York at Columbia Business School.

Through Kapius and related vehicles, he holds managing-director roles across several holding entities (e.g., Phi CON GmbH, PHU Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH, and numbered PMB Management GmbH companies), and as of August 2024 is listed as Managing Director of Fancy Flair Textil GmbH (Bisingen), consistent with a Kapius brands/retail investment.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests family/entrepreneurial capital with a long-term horizon — not a time-limited fund — aiming for sustainable value creation rather than short-hold flips
  • Targets profitable Mittelstand companies with €5–50m in revenue, solid market positioning, differentiation from competitors, and experienced management teams
  • Sector emphasis on industry & mechanical engineering, brands & retail, and services
  • Flexible deal structures: minority stakes, growth/capital increases, and succession (Nachfolge) solutions
  • In its own words, Kapius supports "medium-sized companies with capital and know-how to help them grow in a sustainable way"
  • Explicitly avoids: startup/seed funding and restructuring/financial-recovery situations

Notable Investments

  • Fancy Flair Textil GmbH (Bisingen) — textiles/brands & retail company; Hufenbecher listed as Managing Director from August 2024 (consistent with a Kapius portfolio holding)
  • Kapius does not publish a full portfolio list; commercial-registry filings show a network of holding vehicles (Phi CON GmbH, PHU Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH, and multiple PMB Management GmbH entities) used to hold its Mittelstand stakes
  • During his Peter Möhrle Holding tenure he managed and expanded a portfolio of medium-sized enterprise shareholdings (specific companies not publicly disclosed)
