Background
Dr. Thomas Weber is a founding and managing partner at LGT Capital Partners AG and is listed by the firm as a Managing Partner in its Multi-Alternatives group. LGT Capital Partners describes itself as a privately owned global multi-alternatives firm, owned by the Princely Family of Liechtenstein, with USD 110 billion in assets under management and offices across Europe, North America and Asia-Pacific.
Weber joined LGT Group in 1989 after completing a PhD in business administration at the University of St. Gallen, where he also lectured part-time. Before LGT Capital Partners, he worked at LGT Bank and Liechtenstein Global Trust in corporate and investment roles. In 1991 he moved into the Portfolio Management Division as Head of Methods and Marketing, where he worked on investment-process development, new investment products and a portion of the global equities portfolio.
In 1996, Weber co-founded LGT’s third-party hedge fund activities. He has served in senior investment-governance roles including chairman of LGT Capital Partners’ Alternative Investment Committee and Liquid Alternatives Manager Selection Investment Committee, vice chairman of the Endowment Portfolio Investment Committee, and chairman of the Multi Alternatives Investment/Management Team. Venture Kick lists him as a member of its Swiss investor and venture-capital expert jury.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Weber’s core investment background is in alternatives, especially hedge funds and multi-alternatives. In a 2010 investor profile, he was quoted saying: “alternative investments, hedge funds and private equity, are an important asset class that can protect and build wealth.”
- His hedge-fund selection philosophy is manager-led: Weber said that in hedge funds “more than 50 percent of the variance of returns comes from manager selection.”
- LGT Capital Partners’ venture strategy is primarily institutional rather than classic angel investing: it invests in venture-capital funds, LP interests, co-investments and direct secondaries, with access to more than 400 venture-capital managers and more than 15,000 underlying companies.
- LGT Capital Partners says its venture approach targets “high-quality technology-driven companies” and “category-winning growth stage companies.”
- LGT Capital Partners’ broader investment philosophy emphasizes skill-based investing, active management and partnerships, forward-looking asset allocation, and ESG integration.
- Through Venture Kick, Weber is connected to seed-stage Swiss startups. Venture Kick describes its jury as Swiss and international investors who invest privately or represent VC firms, family offices or business angel groups and support Swiss startup talent with know-how, time and networks.
