Background

Drew Burdon is a Partner on the EQT Life Sciences team. He joined LSP, formerly Life Sciences Partners, in 2019 and remained there until 2022, when LSP joined forces with EQT and was renamed EQT Life Sciences. EQT describes the platform as one of Europe’s largest life sciences investors, with a history of backing therapeutics, medical devices, diagnostics and healthtech companies.

Before investing, Burdon spent 13 years at Smith & Nephew across R&D, commercial strategy and corporate development. His last role there was Director of Corporate Development in London, with a focus on M&A. Earlier roles included strategic planning in Advanced Healing Technologies and science-management work in corporate / biologics and spine.

Burdon began his scientific career at Cancer Research UK in Leeds as a Senior Scientific Officer / postdoctoral researcher. He holds a BSc with honors in Medical Biochemistry and a PhD in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of Leicester, plus an MBA from The Open University.

His current work appears centered on EQT’s Health Economics strategy: backing medtech, diagnostics and digital health companies that can scale commercially while improving quality of care and reducing cost burden. Public board roles tied to his investments include Phagenesis, Onera Health, FundamentalVR, Neurent Medical and LUMA Vision.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through EQT Life Sciences’ Health Economics strategy, which focuses on “best-in-class, and first-in-class innovative solutions that simultaneously enhance patient outcomes and drive cost efficiencies across healthcare systems.”
  • Targets companies developing and commercializing medical devices, diagnostics and digital health across Europe and North America.
  • Prefers technologies already in market or close to regulatory approval, where product and regulatory risk are more de-risked and the company is ready for commercialization or scale-up.
  • Looks for large unmet clinical needs in common diseases, with a quantified healthcare cost-benefit case. EQT states that each Health Economics investment includes a “detailed and quantitative health care analysis” supporting the expected positive cost impact.
  • Burdon’s own deal quotes emphasize clinical utility, adoption evidence, and health-economic value: on FundamentalVR, he highlighted complex surgical-procedure training needs and noted the platform’s differentiated approach and customer adoption; on Phagenesis, he highlighted reduced hospital length of stay and healthcare-cost reductions; on Onera, he cited product-market fit and potential to improve care while lowering costs.
  • In July 2026, he described EQT’s UK healthtech activity as a commitment to “tap into the attractive UK health tech ecosystem and grow strong companies together.”
