Background
Drew Scannell is a Partner at NewSpring Capital, where he works with the firm's dedicated mezzanine (private credit) strategy, NewSpring Mezzanine. He joined NewSpring in 2015 and was promoted to Partner on February 10, 2026, after previously holding the title of Vice President. In his role he is responsible for all stages of the investment lifecycle — sourcing, diligence, execution, underwriting and structuring of credit investments, and portfolio value creation — for lower-middle-market companies.
Before NewSpring, Scannell worked at Baker Tilly Capital, a Philadelphia-based investment banking and corporate finance advisory firm, where he handled financial analysis and prepared pitch books, confidential information memoranda, management presentations, and valuation reports for sell-side, buy-side, and corporate-planning engagements. Earlier, he was with Hempstead & Co., LLC, a boutique business-valuation and corporate-finance advisory firm, conducting financial analysis and preparing valuation reports for estate planning, fairness opinions, and litigation support.
Scannell earned a BA in Economics and Spanish from Bucknell University. Over his tenure at NewSpring he has contributed as a member of the investment team to more than a dozen successful portfolio exits, and he helped grow the mezzanine investment team from 6 to 14 professionals. He currently serves on the boards of several NewSpring portfolio companies, including Precision Group, SprayEZ, The Virginia Food Group, Fiber Glass Coatings Inc., I Love Produce, Airiam, and Central Rock Gym, with past board seats at Boston Valley Terra Cotta, United Building Solutions, Lynn Electronics, and Altus Receivables Management.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through NewSpring Mezzanine, a private-credit strategy providing flexible debt and/or equity capital to lower-middle-market companies — not an angel/seed investor despite older stub tags.
- Targets companies with roughly $5–20M in revenue and a $2M+ EBITDA minimum, backing entrepreneurs, management teams, and private-equity sponsors.
- Sector focus spans business services, consumer products/services, manufacturing & distribution, and technology.
- Emphasizes an "operator mindset" — hands-on value creation via in-house operating partners and a network of seasoned operators, board members, and advisors.
- On the firm's culture, Scannell has said: *"The Firm's collaborative culture, disciplined investment approach, and focus on long-term partnership have made this an exceptional place to grow professionally."*
- A NewSpring general partner, Andrew Panzo, described his approach: *"Drew's investment judgement, leadership, and commitment to our portfolio companies and team embody NewSpring's values."*
