Background
Duncan Robertson is a finance executive turned investor whose career spans roughly three decades in technology operating roles. He is a Chartered Accountant who began his career as a senior accountant at Deloitte & Touche in 1990. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Cape Town in South Africa and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.
The bulk of his operating career was as a CFO and senior finance leader in technology. He served as Vice President, Finance and Treasurer at Orbit Semiconductor and CFO at Sensory, Inc., then was Vice President of Finance and Investor Relations at Flextronics (October 2001–June 2005). From June 2005 to June 2009 he was CFO of Aricent Inc., a technology services company with more than $500M in annual revenue, over 10,000 employees, and operations in 25+ countries. He subsequently co-founded and served as CFO of SnapStick, Inc., a mobile application software company.
Robertson is best known publicly as CFO of OpenTable, Inc., the online restaurant-reservations company, a role he held from August 2011 until October 2014, overseeing the company's financial operations through its public-company years. In November 2014 he joined the board of directors of Care.com, where he served until the company was acquired by IAC in late 2019.
Today Robertson is a partner and CFO of Paxion Capital — a multi-generational private investment partnership founded in 2015 by Jim Davidson (co-founder and former managing partner of Silver Lake Partners) and other investors and operating executives, based in Palo Alto/Menlo Park, California. Paxion has since operated under the name Bridger Holdings. Robertson is also a member (and, per the foundation's own listing, chair) of the Board of Trustees of The San Francisco Foundation, one of the largest community foundations in the U.S.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests as an angel and through Paxion Capital, a multi-family office that backs private businesses across technology-based services, financial/insurance services, and real estate.
- Brings a CFO/operator lens — his value-add skews toward financial discipline, scaling finance functions, governance, and board-level oversight rather than purely product or technical mentorship.
- Comfortable across the capital stack: early/seed angel checks personally, plus later-stage growth, Series D/E, and private-equity/corporate-minority positions via Paxion.
- Paxion describes itself as a "multi-generational private partnership" holding substantial interests in private businesses — implying a patient, long-hold, relationship-driven posture rather than high-velocity seed dealmaking.
Notable Investments
- Flywheel — application/business-productivity software company; his recorded personal angel investment (November 2014).
- Innovium — networking/data-center silicon startup held in the Paxion (Bridger) portfolio; exited via acquisition by Marvell Technology in 2021.
- 15 Seconds of Fame — consumer media/technology company; Paxion participated in a ~$15M Series A round (May 2024).
- Patrinely Group — real estate development and property management firm; Paxion took a significant (corporate-minority) stake in November 2020.
- Care.com — not a Paxion deal, but a board directorship he held (2014–2019) until the IAC acquisition, reflecting his governance footprint.
