Background
Edmund Buckley is a private equity investor with more than 20 years of experience in the European mid-market. He holds a Master of Arts (M.A.) in History from the University of Cambridge (1997–2000) and began his career in investment banking at Morgan Stanley before moving into private equity in London. His earlier career included a partner role at Bregal Capital, a stint as CEO of CompactGTL, and board directorships at portfolio companies including MKM Mansfelder Kupfer und Messing GmbH.
From April 2019 to March 2022 he served as Managing Director, Private Equity at THI Investments — a Stuttgart- and London-based single-family office and long-term ("permanent capital") direct private equity investor with roughly €1.8bn in AUM. There he led control investments in European middle-market companies and held several non-executive director seats, including on the acquisition of Belgium-based sandwich-panel manufacturer RE Panels S.A. (EPCO/TECSEDO brands) from The Riverside Company in 2019.
In April 2022, Pictet recruited Buckley as Global Co-Head of Private Equity and Head of Direct Private Equity within Pictet Alternative Advisors, based in London. He was hired to build and lead Pictet's inaugural direct (single-company) private equity strategy — a departure from the group's traditional fund-of-funds and co-investment approach. He assembled a multi-person team spanning DACH origination, deal execution, investment management, and value creation/operational improvement.
Under Buckley, Pictet made its first direct PE investment (Pareto FM) in late 2023, and the debut fund reached a final close of €403 million in March 2026. He describes his approach as thematic, sector-based deal origination combined with close partnership with founders and management teams to help strong companies "embrace transformation and accelerate growth."
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Stage/structure: Control/majority stakes in established, profitable European mid-market companies — a buyout investor, not an early-stage or seed backer.
- Sectors: B2B/Business Services, Education, and Industrials as core verticals, plus Technology/IT services and Healthcare, aligned to the mega-trends of energy transition and digitalisation.
- Geography: European mid-market, concentrated in the DACH region and the UK.
- What makes him say yes (in his words): companies with "high operating margins and differentiated products or services" that "operate in niche markets with high barriers to entry."
- Style: "A bottom-up approach to investing… quality businesses but at reasonable valuations," with "a long-term approach with a partnership mindset" and a focus on being good stewards, sustainability and responsible-investing criteria.
- Value creation: a "buy-and-build" playbook emphasizing revenue growth, pricing optimization, operational efficiency, IT transformation, and add-on M&A.
- Philosophy: He is fond of the Mark Twain line "History doesn't repeat itself, but it often rhymes," and stresses that despite experienced pattern-recognition, "the team and I still rely upon data and analysis to take investment decisions."
