Background
Edward Kelly is a Managing Director and the Chief Operating Officer of Strategic Value Partners, LLC (SVPGlobal), a global opportunistic credit and special-situations investment firm founded by Victor Khosla in 2001 and headquartered in Greenwich, Connecticut. In his role, Kelly oversees the finance, operations and legal functions of the firm rather than leading investments. He has served as COO since early 2006, spanning the firm's growth from its distressed-investing roots into a multi-strategy platform managing roughly $22 billion in assets.
Before joining SVP, Kelly built a career in hedge-fund finance and operations. From 1999 to 2006 he was a Partner and Chief Financial Officer at Sagamore Hill Capital Management. Prior to that, from 1998 to 1999, he was Chief Financial Officer of Croesus Capital Management. Earlier in his career, from 1990 to 1998, he worked at the accounting firm Goldstein Golub Kessler, where he rose to Senior Manager specializing in audit, tax and consulting services for hedge funds and broker-dealers.
Kelly holds a BS in Accounting from the State University of New York at Albany (1990). Regulatory and profile data indicate he holds an ownership stake of less than 5% in Strategic Value Partners, LLC. His background is that of a firm operator and financial/administrative leader — the executive who runs the "business of the business" at a large alternative-asset manager.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- As COO, Kelly does not personally set an investment thesis or write checks; he runs firm-wide finance, operations and legal. Any "thesis" belongs to SVPGlobal as a firm.
- SVPGlobal's strategy: opportunistic credit and special situations — distressed debt, private/direct lending, event-driven investing, hard assets (real estate, infrastructure, aircraft, power plants) and special-situations private equity.
- The firm frequently takes control or significant-influence positions, then works operationally to turn businesses around — it reports control or significant influence over ~18 businesses employing 90,000+ people.
- Geographic focus is North America and Europe, with Europe historically a third to half of the portfolio, plus a presence in Tokyo; the firm has invested more than $57 billion of capital since inception (including $18B+ in Europe).
- Deal sizes are institutional, not angel/seed: SVP's Strategic Value Special Situations Fund V closed at a $5 billion hard cap.
Notable Investments
- Klöckner Pentaplast (kp) — Global rigid plastic film and packaging leader (Montabaur, Germany). SVP recapitalized/acquired it in 2012, became majority shareholder, guided multiple refinancings (including a €1.9bn refinancing and a first ESG-ratchet-linked US-market term loan), and exited on November 4, 2025.
- ~18 controlled businesses across packaging, industrials, real estate, infrastructure, power and aviation — SVP's broader special-situations portfolio spanning North America and Europe.
