Background

Edward Liu is a Managing Partner at WI Harper Group, one of the longest-running cross-border venture firms bridging the US and Asia. Founded in 1993, WI Harper has managed roughly US$1 billion in committed capital, made 300-plus investments, and recorded more than 100 exits, operating out of San Francisco, Taipei, and Beijing. At the firm, Edward is actively involved in WI Harper's seed initiatives and fundraising activities and manages the Alibaba Taiwan Entrepreneurs Fund II, a vehicle backing startups tied to the Greater China / Taiwan ecosystem.

Before joining WI Harper, Edward built a career spanning investor relations, corporate development, and banking. He served as Head of China Operations at The Piacente Group, a full-service investor relations and financial communications consultancy. Earlier he was Director of Investor Relations at Xinhua Sports & Entertainment Ltd. (Nasdaq: XSEL) and Director of Investor Relations & Corporate Development at Linktone Ltd. (Nasdaq: LTON), giving him hands-on experience with US-listed Chinese companies. He began his finance career as a Credit Analyst and Associate at Silicon Valley Bank (Nasdaq: SIVB) in Santa Clara, California, where he co-managed a ~$100 million portfolio of venture-backed, early-stage technology and life-science companies.

Edward earned a bachelor's degree in Finance and Marketing from the University of San Diego and an MBA from Shanghai Jiao Tong University. He was named to Citi Private Bank's NextGen class of 2011. His stated areas of expertise include deal structure and strategy, risk management, commercial banking, and investor relations.

He currently represents WI Harper on the boards of RWDC Industries, XW Labs, YesHealth, Health2Sync, Ecoinno, and GenG (Gen.G Esports).

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through WI Harper's cross-border model — backing early-stage US and Asian companies that can scale across both markets, with a focus on the firm's seed initiatives.
  • Sector emphasis reflected in his sourced deals: AI/data software, semiconductor and deep-tech IP, digital health and life sciences, sustainable materials, and consumer/esports.
  • Manages the Alibaba Taiwan Entrepreneurs Fund II, signaling a mandate to support Taiwan- and Greater-China-linked founders and to plug them into regional strategic partners.
  • Values in founders align with his own background: sound deal structure, disciplined risk management, and strong investor-relations/communication ability — useful in companies aiming for later institutional rounds or public listings.
  • Takes an active, board-level role in portfolio companies rather than passive checks (holds six current board seats).
