Background

Ed Northam has spent more than three decades in the global clean-energy infrastructure sector, with over 25 years directly in renewable energy. Before entering banking, he spent roughly a decade as co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of an Australia-based clean-energy investment fund, and earlier did legal/advisory work in the power sector. He is credited with having developed and financed more than 100 renewable-energy projects and businesses globally, across a range of energy-transition fuels and technologies.

He joined the UK Green Investment Bank (GIB) in 2012, rising to Head of Investment Banking, where he led the bank's investment origination and execution activities. When a Macquarie-led consortium (Macquarie Group, Macquarie European Infrastructure Fund 5, and Universities Superannuation Scheme) acquired GIB from HM Government for £2.3 billion in 2017, the business was renamed the Green Investment Group (GIG) and Northam was appointed to lead it across Europe and the UK.

After about five years running the European/UK business, he relocated to Singapore in 2022 to become Head of Asia Pacific for MAM's Green Investments while continuing to lead GIG's global core-renewables strategy. At the beginning of 2026 he stepped up to become Global Head of Green Investments at Macquarie Asset Management, taking charge of the firm's flagship renewable-energy investment arm.

Educationally, Northam has been associated with Monash University and Bond University in Australia, and holds a 1999 Enterprise Analysis and Valuation qualification from the Jones Graduate School of Business at Rice University in Texas.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at infrastructure/platform scale in renewable and clean-energy assets — developers, operating projects, and clean-energy platforms — rather than early-stage startups.
  • Core belief that scale is the decisive competitive advantage: "Scale is the critical driver for how you win in this space." Larger, well-capitalized players can better absorb permitting complexity, supply-chain constraints, and shifts in the cost of capital.
  • Views the energy transition as a "multi-decade agenda" and an "obligation, not just an opportunity."
  • Emphasizes the growing "friction in the delivery model now, whether that's a supply chain constraint, or shifts in the cost of capital," and favors platforms positioned to manage that friction.
  • Sees the supply–demand imbalance in clean power as "probably most acute" in the United States, making it a priority growth market alongside Europe, Australia, and Asia.
  • Focuses on onshore wind, solar, and energy-transition technologies; has signalled caution on offshore wind.

Notable Investments

  • DESRI (D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments) — U.S. renewables developer; cited by Northam as "outperforming" its initial investment case.
  • Treaty Oak — clean-energy platform; also described as outperforming its original investment thesis.
  • Green Investment Group portfolio (broad) — GIG/GIB has developed and financed 100+ renewable-energy projects and businesses globally across wind, solar, and other transition technologies under Northam's leadership.
