Background

Ted Prince is a senior media, data and analytics operator who has angel-invested alongside a network of former media and telecom executives. He holds a B.A. in History from Yale University, plus a J.D. from Duke University School of Law and an M.A. in Natural Resource Economics and Policy from Duke's Nicholas School of the Environment. Earlier in his career he served as SVP of Strategy and Business Development at AOL (Time Warner).

From 2003 to 2012 Prince was Chief Operating Officer of Global Media at National Geographic and President of National Geographic Ventures — the company's for-profit arm — where he led its cable assets, television and digital-media businesses, and new initiatives spanning content, marketing, technology, mobile, distribution and partnerships.

In September 2012 he joined Neustar as Senior Vice President of Media and New Ventures, overseeing the Media group (including Neustar's UltraViolet/Information Services work) and developing new media and analytics businesses and strategic partnerships. From 2014 he oversaw Neustar's Marketing Solutions and Risk Solutions businesses, and from June 2019 he was President of Neustar Analytics Solutions — the company's largest P&L — running product, operations, technology, data/analytics and product marketing for cloud-based, real-time analytics solutions.

After nearly nine years at Neustar, Prince was appointed Kantar's first Group Chief Product Officer effective April 1, 2021, based in London and reporting to then-CEO Alexis Nasard. In the role he is responsible for defining and delivering Kantar's next generation of technology-enabled insights products and real-time platforms.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests at the seed stage as an individual angel, typically as one of several operator-investors in a syndicated round rather than a lead.
  • Gravitates toward sectors he has operated in for two decades: media and entertainment, video/content distribution, and data-driven marketing & advertising analytics.
  • Brings an operator's edge — go-to-market, distribution, partnerships and productizing data/analytics — rather than purely financial capital.
  • His own product philosophy (from his Kantar appointment): *"I am excited to play such a crucial role in defining the next generation of technology-enabled insights and new platforms"* — signaling a bias toward startups building real-time, data/analytics-led platforms.

Notable Investments

  • ICX Media — A content-distribution and data/video-intelligence platform for independent video creators, brands and media companies. Prince was named among the investors/advisors in ICX Media's $2.5M seed round (announced March 2016), listed via his Neustar / National Geographic / AOL credentials. The round was led by Phil Herget (ex-Columbia Capital, ex-Vubiquity), and the investor/advisor group included Neustar founders and executives (Jeff Ganek, Robert Poulin, Mark Foster) plus executives from AppNexus, Charter Communications and Point Judith Capital.
