Since 2000, van Wezel has held CEO roles at several life sciences companies in the Netherlands. A third-party biography also identifies him as having served as director of business development at Pepscan Systems and managing director of Macrozyme, where he worked on preclinical development of an oral anti-diabetic compound and partnering with Genzyme.
At BGV, van Wezel currently serves on supervisory boards including Azafaros, Scenic Biotech, Confo Therapeutics, TigaTx, and Genase Therapeutics. His prior board and investing roles include Progentix Orthobiology, acquired by NuVasive; NovioGendix, acquired by MDxHealth; Acerta Pharma, acquired by AstraZeneca; and Synaffix, sold to Lonza. He is also on the board of Mibiton.
He holds an M.Sc. in chemistry from Utrecht University and an M.Sc. in biochemical engineering from Delft University of Technology.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- BGV describes itself as “specialised in seed investment for innovative early stage companies” and says it generally acts as lead investor.
- BGV V, a €150 million fund launched in 2023, is focused on seed and early-stage biotech companies and expects to invest in approximately 12 companies focused on drug discovery and development.
- The firm looks for “therapeutic innovations that stem from truly differentiated science and are supported by convincing experimental data.”
- Van Wezel’s quoted Fund V rationale: BGV aims to build new companies “with the goal of creating transformational treatments” and to support founders with “capital and expertise” to move projects “from discovery to clinical proof-of-concept.”
- BGV’s target profile is early-stage European biotech where scientific innovation, unmet medical need, and the potential to demonstrate significant proof of concept converge.
- The firm emphasizes hands-on company building, clinical-trial progression, and exit potential, using its network across universities, biotech companies, large pharma, and Forbion.
