Background

Edward Yip joined Norwest Venture Partners in 2012 to partner with founders building the next generation of companies in commerce, marketplaces, hardware-enabled services, and fintech. For more than a decade he served as a Partner making seed, early, and late-stage investments, and he took board seats at a number of the firm's consumer and infrastructure portfolio companies. In 2024 he transitioned from Partner to a Senior Advisor role at the firm.

Prior to Norwest, Ed was co-founder and President of Spree Network Inc., an early social commerce network. Before turning to operating and investing, he spent four years with the Mergers & Acquisitions Advisory Group at Evercore Partners in New York and London, where he advised on technology, media, and telecom transactions.

Ed earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and Environmental Studies from Dartmouth College, where he co-founded the Dartmouth Entrepreneurs Forum (a 500+ member community). He has also mentored startups through Plug and Play's Startup Camp. Since 2024 he has additionally served as Managing Partner at Lido Partners. He writes occasionally on Medium (as an "early stage venture investor at Norwest") and is active on X as @Edward_Yip.

Note: The stub data classifying Ed as an independent "Angel Investor" focused solely on seed rounds is inaccurate — he invests through Norwest, an institutional multi-stage venture and growth equity firm, across seed through late-stage.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Backs founders across commerce, marketplaces, hardware-enabled services, and fintech, with a broader remit spanning consumer products/services, food tech, e-commerce/retail, SaaS, healthcare IT, edtech, media, mobile, infra tech, and AI.
  • Invests at seed, early, and late stage, leveraging Norwest's multi-stage platform (Norwest writes checks across venture and growth equity out of large multi-billion-dollar funds).
  • Gravitates toward consumer marketplaces and tech-enabled services that unlock underused assets or streamline broken workflows — e.g., Swimply (peer-to-peer pool rentals) and Noyo (API infrastructure for the health-benefits ecosystem).
  • On his investment in Butter Payments, he framed the thesis around involuntary churn — arguing that recovering failed subscription payments is a large, overlooked revenue and retention problem (see his Medium post, "Let the Butter Churn, Not Your Customers!").
  • Focused geographically on North America.
