Background
Egbert Prenger is the CEO and a Partner of Egeria, a multi-practice European investment firm (private equity, evergreen, and real estate) headquartered in Amsterdam with additional offices in Berlin, Munich, Zug, and Boston. He joined Egeria in October 2008 as an Associate, was promoted to Partner in 2019, and became the firm's CEO in 2022. Egeria itself has more than 28 years of investment history and manages several billion euros across its practices.
When he made Partner in 2019, Prenger was put in charge of Egeria's Evergreen Portfolio — the firm's long-hold vehicle — which has included companies such as Mosa, M&G Group, Duravent (US), MAAS Aviation (Ireland), APOC Aviation, and Leads.io. Over his career at Egeria he has been directly involved in a range of control transactions, including the carve-out and independence of Axent (funeral insurance) and NRC (Dutch newspaper), as well as investments in CleanLease (linen/textile services), MCi (Tier-2 automotive), Sif (offshore wind foundations), and Dynniq (formerly Imtech Traffic & Infra).
Prenger studied International Business Administration at Erasmus University Rotterdam, where he earned a Master's degree in Finance & Investments. He describes his own approach as structurally improving — and sometimes repositioning — companies for the future "through collaboration, creativity and common sense."
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Backs mid-market companies in the Benelux and DACH regions where management co-invests and operates as co-owner — alignment with founders/managers is central to the model.
- Targets healthy, growing businesses with enterprise value up to ~€500 million and serious growth potential, typically held for 5–7 years (with an evergreen option for much longer holds).
- Sector-agnostic within the mid-market, with demonstrated depth in manufacturing/industrial, food & beverage, hospitality, IT services/digitization, and specialized industrial services.
- Value creation is hands-on: add-on acquisitions, international expansion, digital transformation, operational excellence, and strengthening management teams ("active and intensive holding model").
- In his own words on EPEF VI: *"We appreciate the vote of confidence from our investors… and are excited to continue partnering with founders, management teams, and employees to build leading companies."*
- Stated personal philosophy: improving and repositioning companies "through collaboration, creativity and common sense."
