Background

Ekaluck Wangchucherdkul is a Managing Director and founder of Lombard Asia, a Bangkok-based growth-equity firm formed by the former investment professionals who made up the Southeast Asia deal team of Lombard Investments, Inc. and its affiliates across Bangkok and Ho Chi Minh City. He is based at the firm's Bangkok headquarters on Wireless Road.

Before his career in private equity, Ekaluck built a background in investment and corporate banking. He was a Director in Barclays' Global Finance and Risk Solutions group in Singapore, where he originated transactions focused on fund-raising and risk management. Earlier he served as a Vice President in the Royal Bank of Scotland's Corporate and Investment Banking group in Bangkok, specializing in structured corporate risk-management solutions, and as a Senior Vice President at Finansa Securities in Thailand, where he led coverage and execution of IPOs, debt restructurings and M&A transactions.

Ekaluck holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical Engineering (second class honors) from Chulalongkorn University and an M.B.A. from Imperial College Business School in London, which he attended as a recipient of the Chevening Scholarship awarded by the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office. His mix of engineering, capital-markets and structured-finance experience underpins Lombard Asia's hands-on, execution-oriented approach to growth investing.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Provides growth and expansion capital, typically minority growth investments of USD 5–50 million, with select control investments.
  • Targets established, mid-sized companies in Southeast Asia — primarily Thailand and Vietnam — rather than early-stage/seed startups.
  • Broad sector coverage: consumer products, retail, food, financial services and fintech, technology, healthcare, education, hospitality, media & entertainment, logistics and light manufacturing.
  • Positions itself as an "active investor" that partners with management teams to accelerate execution of growth strategy and drive toward successful exits/IPOs (as stated in the MONIX pre-IPO round announcement).
  • Emphasis on companies with a clear path to an IPO or strategic exit, consistent with the firm's growth/pre-IPO stage focus.

Notable Investments

  • MONIX Co., Ltd. — Bangkok-based AI-powered digital lending platform (maker of "FINNIX"), a JV between Thailand's SCBX and China's Abakus Group. Lombard Asia co-led MONIX's ~US$20M first-close pre-IPO round alongside SCBX (announced Feb 2023).
  • Pomelo Fashion — Bangkok-based fashion-tech / online apparel retailer. Lombard (Lombard Investments) participated alongside Provident Capital Partners and JD.com in Pomelo's ~US$19M Series B (2017), then Thailand's largest-ever Series B, and remained an investor through later rounds (US$52M Series C, 2019).
