Background
Elad Gil is one of the most successful solo investors in technology, often described as a "super-angel" who has backed roughly 40+ unicorns. He holds bachelor's degrees in mathematics and molecular biology from UC San Diego and a PhD in biology from MIT (2001), and spent time as a consultant at McKinsey & Co. before moving into technology operating roles.
Gil joined Google around 2004 as a product manager, where he helped build and lead the company's mobile and geo teams during a period of rapid expansion, contributing to early products such as Google Mobile Maps. In 2007 he co-founded Mixer Labs (maker of the GeoAPI developer platform), which was acquired by Twitter in December 2009. At Twitter he served as VP of Corporate Strategy (and led product/engineering teams) from 2009 to 2012, helping the company scale and manage M&A.
In 2013, Gil co-founded Color (originally Color Genomics, now Color Health) with Othman Laraki, a population-health company focused on genetic testing for hereditary conditions such as cancer and heart disease. He served as Color's CEO from 2013 to 2016 and remains chairman; the company played a notable role in COVID-19 testing infrastructure during the pandemic.
Alongside his operating career, Gil built a prolific investing practice, formalized as Gil Capital. He is also the author of *High Growth Handbook* (Stripe Press, 2018), a widely read playbook on scaling startups from ~10 to 10,000 people, covering the CEO role, board management, executive hiring, M&A, and IPOs. In 2023 he raised a roughly $1.1B fund ("Cosmic / Aleph 3"), and in 2025 he began raising a new fund that has scaled its target to nearly $3 billion—an unusually large vehicle run by a single decision-maker.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests across the full lifecycle—from seed and Series A to growth and pre-IPO—as a solo GP with all decisions "flowing through one brain."
- Backs exceptional founders at market inflection points; known for fast, high-conviction decisions in domains he knows well ("when he knows the space, he decides quickly"), and deeper diligence in unfamiliar areas.
- Strong bias toward infrastructure and foundational layers over thin applications—developer tools, fintech rails, and platform companies.
- Has demonstrated repeated pattern recognition across technology waves: infrastructure (Stripe, Airbnb), enterprise software (Figma, Airtable), and most recently AI (Perplexity, Harvey, Character.AI, Mistral).
- Increasingly focused on AI, defense/hard tech, and crypto convergence (e.g., machine-payable APIs, autonomous agents), areas characterized by long cycles and high technical/regulatory friction.
- Operating philosophy (from *High Growth Handbook*) emphasizes product-market fit, disciplined scaling, and the idea that early choices compound: "A choice made at one hundred people becomes a constraint at ten thousand."
