Background

Eldon Klaassen is a technology entrepreneur and investor with more than three decades of experience building and financing enterprise software and financial-technology companies. In 1984 he founded Allegro Development Corporation, a maker of commodity management (CTRM) software used by power and gas utilities, industrial energy consumers, refiners, crude and oil-product traders, and agricultural commodity firms. As founder and CEO, he grew Allegro into a market leader serving hundreds of customers across finance, energy, utilities, mining, and agriculture, and the company is cited as having generated a 57% average annual return to its investors during his tenure.

Klaassen's time at Allegro also included a notable governance episode: after Vector Capital took a stake, a boardroom dispute led to his removal as CEO, producing the widely studied Delaware Supreme Court case *Klaassen v. Allegro Development Corporation* (2014). Allegro was ultimately sold by Vector Capital and Cerium Technology to the ION Group in April 2019. Frank Brienzi had been appointed CEO of Allegro in 2015.

Today Klaassen is the founder and chairman of the Cerium Investment Group, a set of privately owned investment companies he built after Allegro. These include Cerium Technology Ventures (founded circa 2013–2014, early-stage energy and fintech, later adding IoT in 2017), Cerium Capital Markets (2017, public and later private debt and alternatives), and Cerium Natural Resources (2019, oil and gas producing assets). The "Cerium" name references the rare-earth element (Ce), reflecting the group's focus on unique companies with exceptional technologies. Across the group, Klaassen applies a quantitative, process-driven approach to sourcing, executing, and creating value in investments, and frequently takes board and chairman roles at portfolio companies.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests primarily at the early stage in companies "providing technology for energy or capital markets," later broadened to include IoT.
  • Looks for "exceptional companies that have great people, great products, and a great value proposition in markets with attractive dynamics."
  • Employs a "unique and scalable process" for identifying opportunities, executing transactions, and generating value through active strategic direction.
  • Draws on deep domain expertise in commodity/energy trading software and financial technology — areas where he built and scaled Allegro over ~30 years.
  • Typically takes an engaged, hands-on role, often joining boards as chairman rather than acting as a passive check-writer.

Notable Investments

  • Allegro Development Corporation — Commodity management software firm he founded (1984); backed via Cerium alongside Vector Capital and sold to ION Group in April 2019.
  • Codestreet — Fixed-income matching and liquidity-discovery technology for broker-dealers; Cerium made a minority investment (announced Jan 2015) with Rochester Advisors, and Klaassen became Chairman of the Board.
  • Atomica (formerly Innovative Micro Technology) — MEMS/microfabrication company; Cerium-backed management buyout and a ~$30M Series C (Nov 2022) with Novo Tellus Capital Partners and St. Cloud Capital.
  • Citylitics — Predictive intelligence for local infrastructure/utilities; ~$5M Series A (Mar 2022) alongside Dallas Venture Capital and others.
  • Algoriz — Trading-technology/algorithmic-investing platform; venture investment (Nov 2019).
