Background

Elizabeth M. Hewitt is a veteran institutional investor who spent nearly a decade leading the endowment of one of American philanthropy's most respected institutions. She joined the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation on November 2, 2015 as Chief Investment Officer and Senior Vice President, taking responsibility for the Foundation's roughly $1.9 billion endowment (as of June 30, 2015). In that role she owned asset-allocation strategy, fund-manager selection, risk analysis, portfolio-performance evaluation, and liquidity management. She succeeded William Petersen, who retired that year, and served as Sloan's CIO until 2024.

Before Sloan, Hewitt was Managing Director of Public Investments at the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (2006–2015), then a ~$10 billion endowment, where she selected and monitored external managers and sat on the institution's risk-assessment committee. Earlier in her career she was a Senior Vice President at Lazard Asset Management (2001–2006), a hedge-fund analyst at The Torrey Funds (1999–2001), and a wealth-management associate at U.S. Trust Corporation (1998–1999). She holds an MA in Economics from the University of St Andrews, Scotland.

In 2024 Hewitt left Sloan to become Chief Investment Officer of Miras, an institutional family office (associated with Miras Investments), where her mandate again centers on asset allocation, manager selection, risk, and liquidity across the portfolio.

Beyond her day job, Hewitt is active in nonprofit governance. In January 2025 she was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Dana Foundation, and she serves (or has served) as a trustee of the Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, the Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, and, formerly, The Madeira School. She has appeared as a speaker at the Milken Institute's Middle East and Africa Summit and on the PEWIN (Private Equity Women Investor Network) podcast.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Institutional endowment model, not venture/angel. Hewitt builds and oversees diversified, multi-asset-class portfolios by hiring and monitoring external managers — public equity, hedge funds, private equity/venture, and real assets — rather than making direct seed-stage bets.
  • Core responsibilities she has publicly defined: "asset allocation strategy, fund manager selection, risk analysis, portfolio performance evaluation, and liquidity management."
  • Long-horizon, mission-aligned capital. Her career has been spent stewarding perpetual philanthropic capital (Sloan, Robert Wood Johnson) where preserving purchasing power and funding grantmaking over decades drives allocation decisions.
  • Manager-selection discipline. Sloan's Investment Committee chair Richard Bernstein described her as "a first-class investor with extensive experience managing diversified asset portfolios," and Foundation President Paul L. Joskow emphasized that "she not only understands markets, she understands how to work collaboratively with Trustees and Foundation management."
  • Relevance to founders/GPs: The realistic path to her capital is as a fund manager (GP) seeking an LP commitment, not as a startup pitching an angel check.

Notable Investments

  • Alfred P. Sloan Foundation endowment (2015–2024) — oversaw the ~$1.9B multi-asset-class portfolio as CIO.
  • Robert Wood Johnson Foundation — led public-investments manager selection across a ~$10B endowment (2006–2015).
  • Miras (2024–present) — currently directs the family office's multi-asset portfolio.
  • *Governance roles (not investments):* Dana Foundation board (2025), Cary Institute of Ecosystem Studies, Berkshire Taconic Community Foundation, and formerly The Madeira School.
