Elizabeth Proust

Elizabeth Proust is one of Australia's most prominent and longest-serving professional company directors, with a career spanning more than three decades across government, corporate executive leadership, and the boardroom. She holds a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) from La Trobe University and a Law degree from the University of Melbourne, and has been awarded honorary doctorates by La Trobe, Monash and Wollongong universities. In 2010 she was made an Officer of the Order of Australia (AO) for distinguished service to public administration and to business, for her leadership in government and private enterprise, for mentoring women, and for contributions to the arts, education and charitable bodies.

Her executive career began in the public sector, where she held some of the most senior roles in the Victorian Government — Secretary (CEO) of the Department of Premier and Cabinet, Secretary of the Attorney-General's Department — and served as Chief Executive Officer of the City of Melbourne. She then moved into private-sector executive roles, spending around eight years with the ANZ Banking Group, including four years as Managing Director of Esanda, plus roles as Managing Director of Metrobanking and Group General Manager of Human Resources, Corporate Affairs and Management Services (global head of HR). Earlier she also worked in senior roles at BP Australia and BP International.

As a non-executive director, Proust has chaired or sat on the boards of a wide array of major organisations. She chaired Nestlé Australia and the Bank of Melbourne (a Westpac division), and served as a non-executive director of Perpetual Limited, engineering group Sinclair Knight Merz, and services company Spotless. From 2015 to 2018 she was the elected Chairman of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (AICD) — effectively the peak governance body for Australian directors — where she became a leading public voice on board gender diversity, executive accountability and corporate culture.

More recently she has continued an active portfolio of chairmanships and directorships: Chairman of Cuscal Limited (appointed 1 June 2020; the payments and banking-services company listed on the ASX in November 2024), Non-Executive Director of Lendlease Group (from 2018), Lead Independent Director of GQC Partners, and Chair of the SuperFriend mental-health foundation (from May 2021). She has also served on the JP Morgan Advisory Council.
