Background
Emerson Miller is a Principal at ATX Venture Partners, an Austin-based early-stage venture capital firm founded in 2014. ATX says it invests across North America and concentrates on applied AI opportunities in defense and space, industrial and physical operations, healthcare and enterprise, and financial services and infrastructure.
Before venture capital, Miller spent more than ten years as a co-owner managing and expanding an entrepreneurial junior formula-car business in the auto racing industry. His operating work included management, operations, investments, data analysis, engineering, recruiting, hiring, and marketing; ATX says his team’s net assets increased by more than 50x during that period.
Miller graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a BBA in Finance. ATX says that while at Oklahoma he worked on quantitative trading models, equity analysis, computer science, and coding performance management systems. He entered venture capital through the investment office of a 40-plus-year startup investor who had been President and Vice Chairman of Electronic Data Systems.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- ATX’s current thesis is concentrated around applied AI: the firm says it backs companies where AI is “collapsing cost structures, replacing legacy workflows, and creating new categories.”
- The firm looks for AI-native companies with technical depth, customer demand, mission-critical workflows, proprietary data, and category-leader potential.
- ATX typically leads or co-leads early institutional rounds and says initial checks usually range from $250,000 to $5M, with follow-on reserves.
- Sector focus includes defense and space AI, industrial/supply-chain/physical AI, healthcare and enterprise, financial services and infrastructure, and selective horizontal AI infrastructure.
- Miller’s stated interests include AI across use cases, coding capabilities, and technology direction; prior ATX bio language also tied his interests to B2B software, APIs, applications, marketplaces, fintech, supply chain, insurtech, identity, logistics, real estate, construction, data infrastructure, manufacturing, banking, and e-commerce.
- ATX emphasizes operator support after investment, saying: “We don't just hand over capital, we help engineer the outcome.”
