Background
Emily M. Brakebill is a capital-formation and operations leader with more than 25 years in financial services, concentrated in technology, software, internet & media, and financial-services investing. She earned an A.B. in History with highest honors from Stanford University and an M.B.A. with distinction from Harvard Business School. She began her career as a financial analyst in corporate finance at Montgomery Securities, then took operating roles in early internet-service businesses and investment-management positions at firms including Sirrom Capital and Columbus Nova Partners.
In 2009 she co-founded HMI Capital Management, a San Francisco technology-focused equity fund, where she served as Partner, Head of Investor Relations, Chief Operating Officer, and Chief Compliance Officer, and sat on the firm's Management (and Investment) Committee. Over roughly 15 years she helped scale HMI from about $30 million to more than $3.5 billion in AUM, raising capital primarily from top-tier institutional investors — endowments, foundations, family offices, and ultra-high-net-worth individuals — and overseeing all fundraising, LP relations, and investor communications. She remains affiliated with HMI as a Senior Advisor.
Effective March 4, 2024, Brakebill joined True Wind Capital, a San Francisco private-investment firm focused on technology and technology-enabled services businesses, as Partner and Head of Investor Relations, also joining the firm's Investment Committee. True Wind Managing Partner Adam Clammer, who had known her for about 25 years, cited her caliber and long track record in institutional fundraising as the reason for the hire.
Important accuracy note: The stub data labeled Emily Brakebill an "Angel Investor" targeting "Seed Round" deals. Public sources do not support that characterization. Her career is in investor relations, operations, and compliance at institutional technology funds (a hedge fund and a growth-equity firm), where her function is raising and managing institutional LP capital — not making personal seed-stage angel investments. Founders should treat her as an LP-facing / firm-building executive, not a seed check-writer.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Works at firms that back technology and technology-enabled services companies — software/SaaS, internet & media, fintech/financial services.
- True Wind invests across the full range of transaction structures: growth financings, management buyouts, stake purchases, and select venture/structured deals — at institutional scale (~$100M average transaction size), not seed rounds.
- HMI Capital was a long-biased fund investing in public and late-stage technology equities.
- Her personal mandate is capital formation and investor relations: sourcing and stewarding institutional LP relationships (endowments, foundations, family offices, UHNW), fund operations, and compliance — the "raise and run the fund" side rather than deal origination.
- In her own words on joining True Wind: *"I'm thrilled to be joining such an experienced and accomplished leadership team that is equally passionate about finding, nurturing and building growth businesses."*
