Background
Emily Paxhia co-founded Poseidon Investment Management (Poseidon Asset Management) in 2013 with her brother, Morgan Paxhia, making them among the first investors to bring dedicated institutional capital to the legal cannabis sector. Based in San Francisco, Poseidon is described as one of the longest-running dedicated cannabis investment funds, with over a decade of due-diligence and capital-deployment experience and reported assets under management in excess of $105 million across its funds. Emily has evaluated thousands of cannabis companies, held multiple portfolio-company board seats, and works closely with founders on pitch preparation, go-to-market strategy, product launches, and day-to-day operations.
Before cannabis, Paxhia spent more than a decade as a consultant and researcher focused on consumer behavior, brand strategy, macro-trend analysis, and product development, working with major brands including HBO, American Express, and PepsiCo. Her move from New York City to San Francisco in 2011 exposed her to the emerging cannabis industry and set the stage for founding Poseidon two years later.
Her path into cannabis is also personal: a self-described former "Just Say No"/D.A.R.E.-era skeptic, Paxhia lost both her father and mother to cancer, and a hospice worker's comment about the medicinal use of cannabis during her father's illness reshaped her view of the plant. Early on, she and Morgan had to overcome structural obstacles unique to the sector, including finding legal counsel, fund administrators, auditors, and banking partners willing to serve cannabis businesses.
Paxhia holds a B.A. in Psychology from Skidmore College (2002) and an M.A. in Psychology from New York University (2008). Beyond Poseidon, she has served on the boards of the Marijuana Policy Project, Athletes for CARE, and The Initiative (a cannabis-focused accelerator/organization), and is a frequent speaker and commentator on cannabis markets and policy.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests exclusively in the cannabis ecosystem through Poseidon's dedicated funds, spanning plant-touching operators, ancillary/technology companies, and industrial hemp.
- Diversifies across company stage and subsector rather than a single niche; a representative allocation she has cited is roughly 40% cannabis technology, 50% plant-touching, and 10% industrial hemp.
- Applies a consumer-research and brand-strategy lens from her prior career — evaluating product-market fit, scalability, and brand/origin story as key signals of durable traction.
- Distinguishes "products vs. platforms" and "trends vs. real traction," favoring companies that can stand out and scale rather than chase fads (a theme in her 2025 commentary on low-dose drinks and emerging cannabis brands).
- On the broader appeal of the category, she has said "cannabis is the aperture that lets in creative thinking," framing it as valuable to high achievers and mainstream consumers alike.
