Erica Weinstein

Erica Weinstein is a scientist-entrepreneur at Flagship Pioneering, the Cambridge, Massachusetts venture-creation firm founded by Noubar Afeyan that originates and builds biotechnology companies from the ground up (its best-known creation is Moderna). She joined Flagship in 2015 after completing the firm's competitive Fellows program, and has spent her career there in "venture creation" — the earliest stage of company building, where scientific ideas, intellectual property, and business strategy are developed into new startups.

Over roughly a decade she has been a founding team member and Head of Research on several of Flagship's platform companies. She co-founded Ring Therapeutics (unveiled in 2019), where she helped develop the Anellovector gene-delivery platform based on anelloviruses; Laronde, which built an "endless RNA" (eRNA) platform and later merged into Sail Biomedicines; and ProFound Therapeutics, whose founding team (Afeyan, Avak Kahvejian, Yann Echelard, Vini Mani, and Weinstein) was built on the thesis of "proteomic dark matter" — unannotated proteins and peptides. She has also been credited with launching Sonata Therapeutics and Inzen Therapeutics.

Her current role, Vice President of Flagship Labs Strategy & Development, is focused on origination and company growth and on establishing and stewarding external partnerships — enhancing collaboration across Flagship-founded companies and optimizing value creation across the enterprise, rather than functioning as an independent check-writing angel investor.

Weinstein earned her doctorate in biomedical sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where she studied the emerging role of the microbiome in autoimmune disease and held Helmsley Charitable Trust and Levine Foundation fellowships. She holds a B.S. in biology with a minor in global health, culture and society from Emory University. She was named to Business Insider's 2017 list of "30 biotech leaders under 40" and its 2021 list of young serial entrepreneurs shaping the future of biotech startups.
