Background
Erik Balleby Jensen founded Capidea in 2006 and serves as its Partner and CEO. Before establishing the firm, he was a Managing Director / Director at CVC Capital Partners in Denmark, one of Europe's largest private equity houses. Earlier in his career he worked at Unibank/Nordea — where he was responsible for financing acquisitions of small- and mid-sized Scandinavian companies — and as a Senior Manager at Accenture in London, advising international clients on strategy.
He holds an MBA and a Cand.merc. (Master of Science in Economics and Business Administration) from Copenhagen Business School.
At Capidea, Erik has primarily led the fund's investments within distribution. He served as chairman of the board at EET Nordic Group and OPTIWARE, and as a board member at Schades, Aagaard, Budweg, and Klokkerholm Karosseridele. Capidea itself is a Danish private equity fund founded in 2006 that makes long-term investments (typically 4–5 year holds) in competitive Danish SMEs, working to optimise and grow businesses in partnership with existing management rather than replacing them.
Outside of work, Erik is a keen cyclist; in the summer of 2024 he took part in the Team Rynkeby charity ride to Paris, raising funds for children with critical illnesses.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests in established, profitable Danish SMEs, not startups — typical target EBITDA of DKK 15–75m.
- Deal types: generational/ownership succession, MBO, MBI, growth capital, and add-on ("buy-and-build") acquisitions; the firm has done ~36 platform investments plus 40+ add-ons.
- Sector focus: manufacturing, trade/distribution, software, retail and services; Erik personally specialises in distribution.
- Prefers majority stakes but will consider minority; "always invests alongside management," keeping and backing the existing team.
- Emphasises long-term value creation over a 4–5 year horizon through both organic growth and acquisitions.
- On the EET Nordic exit, Erik noted the company "has continuously grown its earnings since Capidea acquired the Company and cemented its position as the leading European niche distributor of IT components."
