Background
Ernesto Del Sordo is an Italian pension and social-security executive. He holds a degree in Law (Giurisprudenza), attended Italy's Higher School of Public Administration (Scuola Superiore della Pubblica Amministrazione), and is enrolled on the national register of chartered auditors (revisori legali dei conti). For many years he was a senior civil servant (dirigente) at the Italian Ministry of Labour, where he worked on the private (supplementary) pension sector and on social-security schemes for entertainment and sports workers. He has also served as president and member of the boards of statutory auditors of various entities.
In 2004 he joined Fondazione ENPAM — the mandatory pension and welfare fund for Italy's doctors and dentists (founded 1937) — as Vice Director General and Director of the Pensions Department (Direttore della Previdenza). In that role he was a principal architect of ENPAM's structural pension reform, which was designed to guarantee the fund's actuarial sustainability for more than 50 years. He was promoted to Director General (Direttore Generale) of ENPAM in 2012.
Del Sordo held the ENPAM director-general post until early 2016, when he retired from the role and was succeeded by Domenico Pimpinella (whose appointment was announced in January 2016). After leaving the top ENPAM job, Del Sordo continued in the ENPAM ecosystem as Director General of FondoSanità, the complementary (second-pillar) pension fund reserved for doctors, dentists, pharmacists, veterinarians and nurses — a fund noted in Italian trade press for strong relative returns.
Because ENPAM manages tens of billions of euros on behalf of Italian physicians, its director general sits at the head of a major institutional investor. During and after Del Sordo's tenure, ENPAM built out a private-markets programme deploying capital as a limited partner into private equity, venture capital and private-debt funds — which is the sense in which Del Sordo's name is associated with "investment."
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Institutional, not angel. ENPAM invests as a large limited partner (LP) into third-party funds and direct real-economy assets, not as an individual angel writing seed cheques. Any framing of Del Sordo personally cutting seed rounds is not supported by the record.
- Fiduciary/actuarial first. The consistent thesis Del Sordo advanced at ENPAM was long-horizon sustainability — reforms explicitly aimed at keeping the doctors' fund solvent for 50+ years drove the investment posture.
- "Sistema Paese" / Italy-first mandate. ENPAM channels a substantial share of its private-markets programme into the Italian economy — public statements cite a private-markets programme with ~€1.9bn subscribed and over 30% targeted at Italy.
- Venture and innovation exposure via funds. ENPAM allocates to venture capital and private debt alongside private equity; as of end-2024 it reported roughly €169m invested in innovative SMEs and about €19m in innovative startups (through funds), with a healthcare/biomedical bias (e.g. its commitment to the Principia biomedical fund).
- Second-pillar returns focus (FondoSanità). In his FondoSanità role, Del Sordo emphasised competitive net returns for member physicians and broadening membership across health professions.
Notable Investments
- Principia III (biomedical fund) — ENPAM committed to Principia's biomedical/life-sciences venture fund, consistent with its healthcare-linked mandate.
- Italian private-equity, venture-capital and private-debt funds — ENPAM ran formal manager-selection processes (OICR selections) for PE, VC and private-debt vehicles with an Italian focus; target allocations reported around €375m to private equity, €100m to private debt and €45m to venture capital.
- Innovative SMEs and startups (via funds) — roughly €169m into innovative SMEs and ~€19m into innovative startups as of 31 December 2024, within a broader private-markets programme of ~€1.9bn subscribed.
- Domestic real-economy investments — ENPAM reported deploying more than €500m into the Italian "Sistema Paese" in 2024.
