Background

Ettore V. Biagioni is the founder and Managing Partner of Alothon Group, a Latin America–focused private equity firm he established in 2004 together with members of the former Latin America private equity team of Deutsche Bank and Bankers Trust. He has been active in Latin American business since the mid-1980s and has worked alongside several current firm members since 1997.

From 1995 to 2004, Biagioni served as Head of the Latin America Private Equity Group of Bankers Trust (BT) and, after BT's acquisition, of Deutsche Bank. Prior to that he was Head of Bankers Trust's Latin America M&A practice. Earlier in his career he worked at Brown Brothers Harriman & Co. in New York and as a consultant at McKinsey & Company in Italy.

Biagioni holds a B.S. with distinction from Babson College and an M.B.A. from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. He sits on the boards of Alothon's portfolio companies and has been a longstanding member of industry bodies including LAVCA (the Association for Private Capital Investment in Latin America) and the Global Private Capital Association (GPCA).

Over its 20-plus-year history, the firm reports having invested more than US$500 million across roughly 32 businesses and partnered with dozens of entrepreneurs, positioning itself as a leading middle-market PE firm in Brazil, with renewable (solar) energy generation as a core current focus area.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Targets control positions in middle-market Brazilian companies with proven growth track records, experienced management, and "tangible franchises" in sectors with strong underlying fundamentals.
  • Writes checks of roughly US$20M–US$60M per deal, with hands-on operational value creation rather than passive capital.
  • Core sectors: renewable/solar energy, consumer products, healthcare, outsourcing, and telecom/IT; renewable energy generation (originating, building, and managing solar parks for blue-chip clients) is a central current theme.
  • Integrates Impact, ESG, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals into portfolio company objectives — a member of The GIIN (Global Impact Investing Network).
  • Geographic emphasis on Brazil, with selective consideration of other Latin American markets such as Chile and Colombia.

Notable Investments

  • Elétron Energy — Brazilian energy solutions/trading company (Recife); Alothon acquired a majority stake for more than R$100 million (~US$27M), completed February 11, 2019, to expand power generation, energy trading, and consumer management.
  • Grupo MPR — Brazilian company; Alothon confirmed an investment in November 2015.
  • Coala do Brasil — consumer/personal products company in the Alothon portfolio.
  • Pet 2 Pet and Dog Minas — pet-sector/personal products companies in the portfolio (consumer distribution).
  • Solar energy generation parks — a portfolio of operating solar parks plus a client-anchored development pipeline.
