Background

Evgueni Konovalenko is a London-based investment professional with a career spanning M&A, private equity, structured products, emerging-markets equities and, most recently, hedge-fund management. He began in finance as a Mergers & Acquisitions Analyst at Merrill Lynch (1998–2000) and then worked as a Private Equity Associate at Soundview Technology (2000–2001). He holds a BA in Economics from Columbia College, Columbia University (New York) and an MBA from the Solvay Brussels School of Economics & Management at the Université Libre de Bruxelles.

The core of his career was at Renaissance Capital, the emerging-markets investment bank, where he spent roughly 2005–2022 (having joined from UBS London, where he was a Vice President in the Structured Products Group in 2004–2005). At RenCap he rose through senior sales and trading roles: Director of International Sales, then Head of Equities, and ultimately Managing Director, Head of International Equity and FICC Sales. In January 2013 Bloomberg reported he was named sole head of Russian equities after co-head Will Abbott's departure, having become joint head of equities for Russia and the CIS in October 2012, and he later oversaw international equity and fixed-income distribution.

Since leaving Renaissance Capital, Konovalenko has been a Managing Partner and Head of Strategy & Business Development at ProMeritum Investment Management LLP, a London emerging-markets credit and macro hedge fund founded circa 2014–2015 by former RenCap colleagues Pavel Mamai and Anton Zavyalov. The firm runs high-conviction macro and credit strategies across emerging and frontier markets, and industry coverage in 2025 noted it passed roughly a decade in business with reported AUM around the $1 billion mark. In his role, Konovalenko leads strategy and business development / investor relations rather than acting as a startup investor.

Alongside his fund role, he serves as Senior Independent Non-Executive Director of Solidcore Resources plc (the gold and silver producer formerly listed as Polymetal International plc), to whose board he was appointed on 18 March 2022. He chairs its Nomination Committee and sits on the Remuneration Committee.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Institutional focus on emerging- and frontier-market fixed income, sovereign and corporate credit, and macro — not venture or seed-stage startup investing based on available public evidence.
  • ProMeritum pursues "high-conviction macro and credit strategies within Emerging Markets," blending bottom-up fundamental research with a disciplined risk-management framework aimed at consistent returns and limited drawdowns.
  • In a 2025 Hedgeweek "Alternative Views" interview, Konovalenko emphasized the role of local networks in the firm's investment process, how the firm judges which risks are "excessive," the case for allocating to EM, the impact of tariffs, and the launch of the firm's "enhanced" fund.
  • His board work at Solidcore reflects a secondary exposure to precious-metals mining and corporate governance in the natural-resources sector.

Notable Investments

  • ProMeritum Investment Management LLP — Managing Partner at the EM credit/macro hedge fund (reported AUM ~$1bn, ~10 years of operating history as of 2025).
  • Solidcore Resources plc (formerly Polymetal International plc) — Senior Independent Non-Executive Director (board appointed 18 March 2022); gold and silver mining producer.
