Background
Ewout Prins is a Managing Partner at Holland Capital, one of the longest-standing private equity firms in the Netherlands (founded more than 40 years ago, originally by Rolf Deves as Holland Venture). Prins joined the firm in May 2000 and has spent his entire private-equity career there, progressing from analyst to investment manager to partner; he became Managing Partner in 2009. In July 2025 he and fellow Managing Partner Hubert Verbeek marked 25 years at the firm. Before entering private equity he built a career at Unilever and worked as an entrepreneur in market research.
He holds a master's degree in Business Administration (Financial Management) from Erasmus University Rotterdam. Within Holland Capital's two-person leadership, he is characterized as the disciplined, process-oriented "farmer" to Verbeek's more opportunistic "hunter" — the partner who structures deals, enforces careful planning, and ensures the firm delivers on its commitments to portfolio companies. He is credited with steadying the firm through crises such as the early troubles at portfolio company Highcare.
Beyond investing, Prins served for roughly eight years on the board of the Dutch Association of Private Equity Companies (NVP / Nederlandse Vereniging van Participatiemaatschappijen), where he has been a public advocate for private equity's role in healthcare. Holland Capital is also a member of the German private equity and venture capital association (BVK), reflecting its expansion into the DACH market.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Invests through Holland Capital's institutional funds across two strategies — "Venture & Growth" and "Growth & Buy-Out" — rather than as an individual angel; funds include the €225m Growth & Buy-Out Fund V, with ~€500m total under management.
- Sector focus on Technology, Healthcare, and Food & Agri (Agrifood-Tech); the firm's most common investment sectors are information technology and medical products.
- Targets established, growth-stage Dutch and German SMEs, often with a distinctive technology or methodology; supports them with buy-and-build, internationalization, and structured 100-day plans.
- People-first philosophy: "entrepreneurial investing is about people – built on trust, collaboration, and decisiveness."
- On his personal approach to commitments: *"I really want everything to be right. Deliver on our promise."*
- On healthcare investing: *"Private equity brings the innovation and entrepreneurship that the sector so desperately needs… We invest in healthcare providers to make them more innovative and effective."*
