Background

Fahmi Hamzah is a Principal and Executive Director of FirstFloor Capital, a Malaysian venture investment firm he helped establish. He has been part of the founding team since the firm's incorporation in June 2000, when five professionals with backgrounds in entrepreneurship, technology and investment banking came together to fund high-growth technology companies. Since inception he has overseen the firm's operations, business planning, fund-raising and investment-management work.

His professional expertise centres on financial forecasting, company valuation and corporate structuring. Before FirstFloor Capital his career spanned trading and services, manufacturing, stockbroking, banking and business technology, including roles at Deloitte Kassim Chan (the Malaysian Deloitte practice) and Arab-Malaysian Merchant Bank. He holds a Bachelor of Commerce (Accounting and Finance) from the University of Tasmania, Australia.

Within FirstFloor Capital, one of Fahmi's signature contributions is the development of the firm's proprietary investment-decision tool, the "Company Maturity Matrix," used to assess where a prospective portfolio company sits on its growth curve. He also serves on the investment committees of the firm's managed vehicles, including Continuum Capital and Continuum Capital II. FirstFloor differentiates itself as one of the few Malaysian VC firms that both owns and runs its own capital, which shapes an operationally hands-on approach to backing founders.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests across the maturity spectrum through distinct funds: Inertia AIF (seed/bridge, very small tickets), Momentum STI (~US$0.5M–1M average), Continuum Capital (US$1M–4M), and Continuum Capital II (up to US$7M).
  • Targets companies that are "beyond the R&D stage, revenue-generating," with "identifiable inflection points in growth" and near profitability — not pure concept-stage bets.
  • Looks for "unique competitive advantages, sustainable value propositions and a strong management team," backing "driven entrepreneurs" with passion and strategic vision.
  • Sector emphasis on information technology, mobility, communications and life sciences — spanning SaaS, IoT, cloud, enterprise IT, semiconductors, and genomics/healthcare.
  • Willing to lead international deals in deep-tech: on the Skeleton Technologies round Fahmi stated the firm believed the company had "great potential to not only transform the international ultracapacitor market through their patented curved graphene power cells but also to become a turnkey energy storage system specialist."
  • Uses the proprietary Company Maturity Matrix to gauge a target's readiness and structure valuations.
