Background
Felix Rieder is an Investment Director at Süd Beteiligungen GmbH, where he has been part of the team since 2025. SüdBG is a wholly owned subsidiary of Landesbank Baden-Württemberg (LBBW) and provides equity and equity-like financing to Mittelstand companies, with capital commitments of more than EUR 500 million.
His current role centers on company acquisitions and disposals and on the development of Mittelstand portfolio companies. SüdBG’s team page states that he brings long experience from a private equity fund and an industrial holding, giving him broad transaction experience and a practical understanding of Mittelstand ownership and growth challenges.
Earlier in his career, Rieder worked in Transaction Services at an audit firm and then in Mergers & Acquisitions and Business Development for a listed healthcare group. Public deal materials also identify him as an Associate on a 2010 Rödl & Partner financial due diligence team for AFINUM’s acquisition of ERPO International, and later as Investment Manager at Finatem, where he was named in public communications around Mungo and Bärbel Drexel.
Rieder studied at the University of Bayreuth and in Lyon, France. He has also completed training as a Certified Valuation Analyst (CVA) and as a certified supervisory/advisory board member.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- SüdBG invests in growth-oriented Mittelstand companies with “Jahresumsatz ab 20 Millionen Euro” and a “Mindestinvestmentvolumen 2,5 Millionen Euro.”
- The firm provides flexible equity and equity-like capital for growth, succession, shareholder changes, spin-offs/carve-outs, and mezzanine situations.
- SüdBG states that it offers both majority and minority investments and can act with a long-term horizon because of its structure.
- The firm’s approach is non-operational ownership: it supports management as a strategic sparring partner and adviser but does not take on operating roles.
- SüdBG evaluates business models, long-term viability, value drivers, and strategic direction before investing; it emphasizes trust-building with owners and management during diligence.
- Rieder’s visible focus is the German Mittelstand, company acquisitions and disposals, and post-investment development rather than seed-stage angel investing.
