Floris Van Alkemade

Floris van Alkemade is a long-time Dutch early-stage technology investor with more than 25 years in venture capital, having managed over €370 million in fund capital across his career. He holds a Master's degree in business econometrics from the Free University of Amsterdam (Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam). Before moving into investing, he worked at the pan-European telecom operator Unisource NV, the investment bank MeesPierson NV, and the consultancy Andersson Elffers Felix BV.

From 1998 to 2008 he was a co-founder and general partner at the NeSBIC CTe (Converging Technology) Funds, a €210 million value-added venture capital program that backed 38 early-stage technology companies in Europe and the US; around 2000 he ran the fund's Silicon Valley office. At the end of 2005 he co-founded Solid Ventures together with Robert Wilhelm and Herman deLatte to invest in Dutch technology companies, where he remains Co-founder and Managing Partner (and a venture partner for the later Solid Ventures II vehicle). He continues to sit on the board of CoolGames, described as the last remaining active company in the Solid Ventures I portfolio.

Around 2014–2015 he joined the Amsterdam-based B2B software VC henQ to help set up its third fund. Announced in September 2015, henQ III was a €50 million fund, and van Alkemade invested alongside co-founders Herman Hintzen and Coen van Duiven in software startups. He has since become less visible in henQ's day-to-day team (the firm's current published team lists Rob, Mick, Sylvie, Jan, Coen and Hein), and in 2018 he co-founded Elanza, a company helping healthcare organizations manage their flexible workforce, where he serves as Director and co-Founder. Alongside these roles he has been an active business angel and coach to numerous startups.

• Invests at seed / early stage in B2B software and SaaS businesses with scalable platforms and recurring revenue.
• At henQ, the model was to lead early seed rounds (~€100k–€500k) and keep reserves to follow on in later rounds — Coen van Duiven summarized the firm's stance as *"henQ is the only Dutch VC firm that dares to invest in early stage companies, in need of seed investments from 100k and has the ability to continue to invest in next rounds up to 10 million euro."*
• Sector interests span enterprise/SaaS software, fintech, and marketplaces; at Solid Ventures these extended to sustainable mobility, smart energy and smart-city solutions.
• Geographic focus is the Netherlands and Western Europe, historically positioning the firm as a gateway to international (especially US) expansion.
• As an angel he backs founders personally, typically in exchange for equity, and adds value as a coach/advisor drawing on decades of early-stage operating and investing experience.
