Background
Frank Amberg is a Managing Director at AltamarCAM Partners, where he joined in January 2023 as Head of Infrastructure for Germany, helping to build out the firm's newly opened Munich office. In this role he is responsible for expanding AltamarCAM's infrastructure activities in Germany and supporting the firm's fundraising and international investment activity. AltamarCAM is one of Europe's larger independent private-markets managers, investing across private equity, infrastructure, private credit, real estate, and venture on behalf of institutional and private clients.
Before AltamarCAM, Amberg spent roughly 15 years at MEAG — MUNICH ERGO AssetManagement, the in-house asset manager of Munich Re and ERGO — as Head of Private Equity and Infrastructure. There he built a global, multi-billion-euro program of fund commitments, co-investments, and direct investments and led a team of around 20 investment professionals across Munich, London, and New York, while holding multiple advisory board seats. Press coverage of his departure (effective end of 2022) credited him and his team with assembling one of Germany's largest private equity and infrastructure programs, on the order of roughly 200 fund and direct investments.
Earlier in his career, Amberg held senior private equity and asset management positions at WestLB Mellon Asset Management / BNY Mellon (in Düsseldorf and New York), WestLB AG (in Düsseldorf and London), and FRIATEC AG (in Mannheim). He holds a Master's degree (Diplom-Kaufmann) in Business Administration from the University of Passau. In his own words on joining AltamarCAM, "I have spent almost my entire career in private equity and infrastructure."
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Institutional private-markets investor, not an angel or seed-stage backer — his deals are fund commitments, co-investments, secondaries, and direct/buyout-stage investments at scale.
- Dual focus on infrastructure (energy transition, digital infrastructure, transport/mobility, social infrastructure) and private equity.
- At MEAG he ran a global program combining primary fund investments, co-investments, and direct investments — a hybrid model that allows both diversified fund exposure and selective concentration in direct deals.
- At AltamarCAM his mandate centers on Germany-based infrastructure plus supporting the firm's broader international fundraising and investing.
- Decades-long institutional orientation: long-duration, cash-flow-generating real assets and established private companies aligned with insurance-style, liability-matching capital (his formative mandate served Munich Re/ERGO's balance sheet).
Notable Investments
- MEAG Private Equity & Infrastructure program — built over ~15 years into one of Germany's largest such programs, reportedly ~200 fund and direct investments spanning private equity and infrastructure across Europe and North America.
- MEAG Infrastructure Equity activity — MEAG's infrastructure equity unit deployed over €3.5 billion of equity for Munich Re across 36 transactions since 2010, the platform area Amberg led.
- AltamarCAM infrastructure (Germany) — since 2023, sourcing and building the firm's German infrastructure activity; specific named transactions have not been publicly disclosed.
