Background
Frank R. Caufield is the Founder and Managing Partner of Darwin Ventures, a venture capital fund-of-funds firm he established in 2004. He is also the son of the late Frank J. Caufield (1939-2019), who was a co-founder and named partner of Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers (KPCB), one of the most storied venture capital firms in Silicon Valley history. Frank R. carries forward a deep family legacy in venture capital, leveraging his unique experience, extensive network, and generational knowledge of the VC ecosystem to identify and invest in compelling opportunities.
Before founding Darwin Ventures, Frank spent over twelve years in high-technology finance, business development, marketing, and sales. He co-founded MarkLogic (originally named Cerisent), a pioneering NoSQL database company, alongside Christopher Lindblad and Paul Pedersen in 2001. At MarkLogic, he was responsible for sales, marketing, and business development, departing after successfully securing venture funding from Sequoia Capital. Prior to that, Frank worked at the Xerox Venture Lab (Xerox PARC's venture arm), where he engineered the spinout of Outride Corporation, which was subsequently acquired by Google in 2001. He also spent time at America Online (AOL), where he created the AOL@School service. Frank holds a B.A. from the University of San Francisco and an M.B.A. from the Anderson School of Business at UCLA.
His father, Frank J. Caufield, left an extraordinary legacy in venture capital. In 1977, Frank J. Caufield and Brook Byers joined Eugene Kleiner and Tom Perkins to form Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Before KPCB, the elder Caufield ran Oak Grove Ventures (1973-1978) in Menlo Park. His notable investments included AOL, Caremark, Quantum Corporation, Sybase, and Verifone, and he served on the boards of Time Warner, Wyse Technology, Quickturn Corporation, and Megabios, among others. He served as lead independent director of Time Warner from 2004 to 2010 and was a former president of both the Western Association of Venture Capitalists and the National Venture Capital Association. Frank J. was also a U.S. Military Academy (West Point, Class of 1962) graduate and Harvard Business School MBA who served as a U.S. Army intelligence officer in Germany before entering venture capital.
Investment Thesis & Focus
Darwin Ventures operates as a fund-of-funds, investing in top-tier, U.S.-based, early-stage venture capital funds. The firm provides diversified exposure across industry sectors with a primary focus on technology, information technology, and healthcare. Darwin employs vintage-year diversification to reduce single-year vintage risk while maximizing returns. Key evaluation criteria include: past performance, managerial and technology experience, team cohesion, alignment of limited partner and general partner interests, and a firm's standing within the venture capital and entrepreneurial community.
In parallel with the fund-of-funds strategy, Frank is an active personal angel investor, having made 24+ angel investments in Silicon Valley-based startups. He gravitates toward early-stage technology companies, particularly those with strong technical foundations and experienced founding teams. He values "weird thinkers" and unconventional entrepreneurs who challenge the status quo.
