Background
Frank Hyman is a Partner at ScaleUp Capital, a London-based private equity firm focused on scaling established B2B digital businesses. The firm says it was founded in 2002 as Root Capital and rebranded as ScaleUp Capital in 2021 to reflect its focus on the scale-up phase rather than seed-stage startup investing.
Hyman graduated in PPE from Oxford University. ScaleUp Capital’s team profile says he began his career in consultancy with Bridgewater and then Capgemini, before moving into operational and managing-director roles at Electrocomponents and Autocue. LinkedIn lists his Oxford education from 1995 to 1998 and his current affiliation with ScaleUp Capital.
He joined ScaleUp Capital in 2013. The firm says he has led new investments and helped develop and roll out its support programme. Public profiles and ScaleUp announcements also show him involved with portfolio companies including Sanctus, Kooth, Digital Theatre and Zevo Health; Zevo lists him as a board member and Partner at ScaleUp Capital.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- ScaleUp Capital focuses on the gap between venture capital and traditional private equity: established businesses that are no longer startups but still need capital and operating support to scale.
- The firm targets B2B digital businesses in software, technology, content and services, especially SaaS, subscription, managed-service and outsourcing revenue models.
- ScaleUp says it partners with companies in the scaling phase generating £2m-£15m of revenue, and ScaleUpX says the firm typically invests c.£6m-£8m per new company.
- The model is hands-on: ScaleUp describes its approach as “more than just investors,” with support across go-to-market, talent, AI transformation, performance management and governance.
- Hyman’s own public comments emphasize selectivity and close support; on Sanctus, he said ScaleUp was “not adopting a spray and pray approach” and instead works closely with a small number of companies.
- The firm looks for companies where operational support can accelerate growth: sharpening go-to-market, building leadership teams, improving management reporting, supporting senior hiring and professionalizing the business.
