Background
Frank H. McCourt Jr. (born August 14, 1953) is an American billionaire businessman, civic entrepreneur, and philanthropist. A 1975 economics graduate of Georgetown University, he is a fifth-generation builder whose family construction business, the original McCourt Company, was founded in Boston in 1893. In 1977 he founded The McCourt Company, developing commercial real estate in Boston — including Union Wharf and a signature 24-acre Seaport property — before selling most of his Boston holdings around 2006.
McCourt is best known in sports as the former owner of the Los Angeles Dodgers, which he bought for $430 million in 2004 and sold to a Guggenheim Partners–led group in 2012 for roughly $2.2 billion — at the time the largest sports transaction in history. After taxes and his divorce settlement, he netted approximately $850 million, which became the seed capital for his subsequent ventures. Forbes first listed him as a billionaire in 2025, estimating his net worth at about $1.4 billion.
Today he serves as Executive Chairman of McCourt Global, the private family company he stepped back from running day-to-day in 2023 (he remains 100% owner). Through McCourt Global he has diversified into real estate (Dallas Design District, London, Miami, and other projects), sports (owner of French football club Olympique de Marseille since 2016; founder of the Premier Jumping League), and finance (founder of private-credit firm MGG Investment Group, which grew from ~$300M under management in 2016 to ~$5.6B by 2023).
His current primary focus is Project Liberty, a roughly $500-million initiative he founded in 2019 (publicly launched 2021) to build a more equitable internet where individuals own and control their personal data. Its technology arm centers on the open-source Decentralized Social Networking Protocol (DSNP) and Frequency infrastructure. In 2024 he authored the book *Our Biggest Fight: Reclaiming Liberty, Humanity, and Dignity in the Digital Age*, and launched "The People's Bid for TikTok," a consortium effort to acquire and re-architect the platform on decentralized rails.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Core conviction — data ownership and digital sovereignty: "We have to break the model or evolve the model into one where it returns the control, the agency, the choice, the ownership and the rights to individuals."
- Backs privacy-first, user-owned social platforms and decentralized infrastructure — his capital is thesis-driven and mission-aligned, not opportunistic.
- Favors ventures that can adopt or advance DSNP / Frequency, his open protocol vision analogous to phone-number portability across carriers (own your data, carry it across platforms).
- Deploys strategic, often large checks (e.g., $15M into MeWe within a $27M round) and is willing to incubate and fund ventures directly through Project Liberty Labs, the Institute, and the Alliance rather than acting as a passive angel.
- Broader family-office appetite spans real estate, sports/equestrian, and private credit, but new tech investing is filtered through the "reclaim the internet" lens.
Notable Investments
- MeWe — Led a $27M round (September 2022, ~$15M strategic from McCourt Global) in the privacy-first social network; positioned as a flagship migration onto DSNP/Project Liberty tech.
- Project Liberty / Frequency / DSNP — His ~$500M initiative and the open-source decentralized social-networking infrastructure it funds and develops.
- The People's Bid for TikTok (2024–2025) — Consortium bid to acquire TikTok's U.S. operations and rebuild it on a decentralized protocol; partners/supporters included Alexis Ohanian, Kevin O'Leary, Tim Berners-Lee, and Jonathan Haidt.
- MGG Investment Group — Private-credit firm he founded (~$300M AUM in 2016 → ~$5.6B by 2023).
- Olympique de Marseille — Acquired the French football club in October 2016 for ~€50M with a pledged ~€200M investment over four years.
- Global Champions League / Tour — Held a 50% stake in the elite show-jumping series (2014–2022).
- Real estate — Dallas Design District, London developments; exited a Miami development stake for $363M in 2022.
