Background

Gabriel Caillaux is Co-President of General Atlantic, Head of EMEA, and Global Head of Infrastructure and Energy Transition Investing. General Atlantic’s team page states that he is a member of the firm’s Executive and Portfolio Committees, as well as the Global Growth Equity and BeyondNetZero Investment Committees. He is based in London.

Caillaux joined General Atlantic in 2004. Before joining the firm, he worked in Merrill Lynch’s telecoms, media and technology division in London and New York. A 2010 General Atlantic announcement reported that he had been promoted to Managing Director and was focused on Financial Services, Business Services & Technology, and Media & Consumer investments.

His education includes a B.S. and M.S. in Finance from ESCP EAP European School of Management. General Atlantic also lists him as a trustee of Parasol Unit.

Over time, Caillaux has become one of General Atlantic’s senior platform leaders. He was named Head of EMEA in 2017 and Co-President in 2019, and in 2023 General Atlantic expanded his responsibilities to include Head of Climate. As of the firm’s current team page, that remit has evolved into Global Head of Infrastructure and Energy Transition Investing.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Caillaux is not primarily a seed or angel investor; the verified profile is General Atlantic growth equity and private equity. General Atlantic describes its core approach as identifying investment themes driven by innovation, entrepreneurship, and long-term secular growth.
  • His current role centers on EMEA growth equity plus infrastructure and energy transition investing. General Atlantic says its energy transition strategy backs companies “scaling technologies critical to the global energy transition” at key growth inflection points.
  • In energy transition, General Atlantic says the fund seeks high-growth, asset-light technologies that enable a more efficient global energy system. The firm’s BeyondNetZero materials emphasize decarbonization, energy efficiency, emissions management, and resource conservation.
  • He appears to favor businesses with clear secular tailwinds and durable data, technology, or network advantages. In the Argus transaction, he said Argus was “an ideal fit” because it had a clear long-term growth trajectory and essential data used in customers’ daily operations.
  • In payments, his Network International comments highlighted rising demand for electronic payments, driven by card usage, internet adoption, and smartphone penetration across the Middle East and Africa.
  • In a 2025 Semafor interview on climate investing, Caillaux said the long-term need for climate investing remained intact despite fundraising headwinds, arguing that the trend would persist for “30 years.”
