Background

Gabriel A. Pozo is the Principal and Founder of Advalurem Group, a New York–based private asset-management firm he co-founded in 2012 with Fred D. Scott III. At the firm he oversees corporate strategy, business development and real estate investments, and chairs the Investment Committee. Advalurem specializes in middle-market commercial and residential real estate — "underserved places and properties that demonstrate compelling relative value" — and has invested roughly $300 million since inception, with its two principals citing a combined ~50 years of experience and more than $10 billion of transacted real estate.

Pozo brings roughly two decades of institutional real estate experience across private equity, investment banking and consulting, and states he has overseen the acquisition and financing of more than $5 billion of commercial real estate. Before founding Advalurem, he oversaw the investment activities of a series of real estate funds at Madison International Realty, a value-added private-equity firm with over $2 billion in AUM, building diversified portfolios for institutional and private-wealth clients. Earlier he provided real estate investment-banking services at Credit Suisse (structured debt and equity investments in U.S. properties) and was one of the first professionals hired to help establish NewStar Financial (NASDAQ: NEWS), a ~$2 billion specialized middle-market lender. He began his career in the real estate advisory practice of PricewaterhouseCoopers, providing valuation and analytical support to large institutional investors.

He holds a B.B.A. in Business Administration from the University of Wisconsin–Madison and a Master's degree in Real Estate from New York University, and is active in the Urban Land Institute and NAIOP.

Important note on classification: The stub data labeled Pozo an "Angel Investor" writing "Seed Round" checks. Public sources do not support this. Every verifiable source describes him as a commercial *real estate* private-equity principal, and Advalurem is a real estate investment firm — not a venture/angel investor in startups. The sections below reflect his actual, verifiable real estate investing focus rather than an angel-investing thesis that could not be substantiated.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in middle-market commercial and residential real estate — properties Advalurem describes as "high-quality, institutional-grade" but "overlooked by institutional investors because of their under-the-radar size."
  • Targets assets that offer compelling relative value and portfolio diversification, structuring positions along the risk/return spectrum according to where the real estate cycle sits (value-add and core-plus strategies).
  • Deal economics: approximately $3–15 million of equity per investment, on properties valued between $10 million and $50 million.
  • Stated firm objectives: preserve capital, generate consistent cash yields, and produce attractive risk-adjusted returns.
  • Pozo has publicly advocated using structured (preferred equity / structured debt-and-equity) investments to enter new markets while limiting downside risk — a theme from his own 2018 bylined article and consistent with his Credit Suisse and preferred-equity background.

Notable Investments

  • Bella Madera Apartments (Dallas, TX) — completed a $60.5 million refinancing via a Freddie Mac loan at a 2.98% fixed rate (Nov 2020).
  • Bucks County, PA office building — acquisition of a ~108,000-square-foot office property (April 2017).
  • Kansas City office project — closed an equity investment (Feb 2016).
  • Recognized as "Preferred Equity Player of the Year" and formed a partnership with IRA Services Trust (2016).
