Background

Ganesh Sonawane is a mechanical engineer who graduated from the National Institute of Technology (NIT), Calicut. He began his career at Bajaj Auto, where he spent roughly five years as an R&D Assistant Manager working on product design, development, and testing in automotive engineering. He has described discovering a passion for purpose-driven innovation during this period — notably building prototypes of vertical-axis wind turbines and innovative wheelchairs, the latter winning the Aavishkar contest in 2011.

In 2015 he co-founded Arcatron Mobility in Pune to build assistive mobility and elderly-care devices, alongside co-founders including Arif Khan, Laxmikant Banjarey, Kunal Kamble, and Dewaj Baruah. The company's early focus was on engineered wheelchairs and physical-aid devices for people with limited mobility and elderly-care needs. Arcatron later launched the consumer-facing brand Frido ("Freedom to do more"), expanding from wheelchairs into ergonomic insoles, cushions, mattresses, footwear, and other "comfort tech" products sold via e-commerce and 1,000+ retail stores nationwide.

Under Sonawane's leadership the business has scaled rapidly: Arcatron Mobility reported revenue of roughly ₹178 crore for the financial year ending March 2025 (cited as a ~145% one-year revenue CAGR), and Frido is frequently cited at roughly $29M in annual revenue in 2025. He is regularly invited to speak at industry forums (D2C India, IReC, CSRBox "Tech Impact Talk") as a voice on building purpose-driven, accessible consumer-health products in India.

His public positioning is primarily that of a founder-CEO rather than a full-time investor. Profile aggregators (Tracxn) describe him as "an entrepreneur, an angel investor and a board member" but record only a single, internal investment to date, so any angel activity should be understood as nascent and opportunistic alongside his operating role.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Core conviction — comfort tech is underpenetrated: Sonawane has publicly argued that "comfort tech in India is still underpenetrated," reflecting his belief that there is large, unmet demand for affordable, well-engineered everyday-comfort and health products.
  • Purpose-driven, scalable innovation: His stated philosophy is backing innovation "that solves unmet societal needs in a sustainable and scalable manner" — improving daily activities like sitting, walking, and sleeping through thoughtfully engineered solutions.
  • Affordability and accessibility first: Frido's stated values — "affordability, accessibility, quality, and innovation" — mirror what he looks for, favoring products that make assisted living dignified, safer, and within reach for mass-market Indian consumers.
  • Sector lean: Per Tracxn, his angel focus skews to HealthTech; his operating expertise is in mobility/assistive devices, consumer health, manufacturing/product development, and D2C distribution.
  • Stage: Early-stage / seed (as indicated in the source brief), though his verifiable investing track record is thin.

Notable Investments

  • Arcatron Mobility / Frido — His own company and the only investment recorded under his name on Tracxn, logged as participation in Arcatron's Series A round (Feb 15, 2024) alongside lead investor OrbiMed. Arcatron has raised in the region of $23M+ in total funding; backers across rounds include OrbiMed, BL Taparia Family Office, Chona Family Office, MGA Ventures, and Venktesh Investment & Trading Company. Frido added a further Series A round (~Nov 28, 2025) with OrbiMed participation.
