Background

Gareth Druce is a Partner and the Chief Operating Officer of Rockwood Private Equity, a Johannesburg-based private equity fund manager. He holds a BSc (Honours) in Business Economics and Accounting from the University of Southampton and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in London in 1996. In 1997 he relocated to South Africa, where he specialised in corporate finance at KPMG Johannesburg.

In 2000 he joined BHP Billiton as Manager for Corporate Finance, South Africa. From 2003 he set up and ran a number of small businesses before rejoining KPMG in 2005 as Head of Business Development for Tax and Legal, focused on the firm's private equity clients. He subsequently served as Chief Operating Officer of Absa Capital Private Equity — the predecessor platform whose Fund I flowed into what became Rockwood.

Druce joined Rockwood in 2008 and is responsible for the firm's operational, financial and investor-relations functions, including portfolio management and valuations. Rockwood is backed by international institutional limited partners including HarbourVest Partners and Coller Capital, and manages a diversified portfolio of buyout and growth-capital investments across Sub-Saharan Africa with a South African core.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in established, medium-to-large companies, not early-stage startups — via management buy-ins/buy-outs, carve-outs, secondary buyouts, leveraged buyouts, and expansion/replacement capital.
  • Sector-agnostic but industrials-heavy: waste management, building materials and roofing, furniture and consumer manufacturing, carpets/paints, and business services.
  • Geography: Sub-Saharan Africa with South Africa as the primary market.
  • Backed by blue-chip global LPs (HarbourVest, Coller Capital), signalling an institutional, control-oriented buyout mandate rather than minority venture cheques.
  • Druce's own remit is operational and financial stewardship plus investor relations — the person to engage on fund operations, LP matters and portfolio-company finance rather than deal origination alone.

Notable Investments

  • EnviroServ — South Africa's largest waste-management company; a flagship Rockwood holding (acquired 2008), later exited to a consortium led by SUEZ with Royal Bafokeng Holdings and African Infrastructure Investment Managers.
  • Safripol — petrochemicals/polymers producer; exited by Rockwood and Thebe to KAP Industrial Holdings.
  • Tsebo Solutions Group — pan-African facilities-management and catering group; exited around September 2016.
  • Kwikspace Modular Buildings — modular/relocatable building manufacturer (Fund I investment).
  • Bravo Brands — furniture manufacturing group with multiple sub-brands (2008).
  • Global Roofing Solutions — steel roofing manufacturer (2021).
  • Prominent Paints — paint manufacturer and retailer (2022).
  • Nouwens Carpets — carpet manufacturer (2022).
