Background
Gary T. DiCamillo is a veteran turnaround executive and board director with more than 40 years of senior management experience, roughly 20 of them as a CEO. He earned a B.S. in chemical engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in 1973 and an MBA from Harvard Business School in 1975. He began his career in brand management at Procter & Gamble, moved to McKinsey & Company, then held operating roles including President of Worldwide Power Tools & Accessories at Black & Decker and VP/General Manager of Culligan U.S.A. (a division of Beatrice).
He is best known as Chairman and CEO of Polaroid Corporation, which he led from the mid-1990s until roughly 2001 as the company's first outside chief executive, navigating its difficult transition from instant photography into the digital era. He subsequently served as President and CEO of Advantage Resourcing (US and UK), a group of privately held technical, professional, and commercial staffing companies based in Dedham, Massachusetts, growing the group's revenues to approximately $1.5 billion.
Since January 2010, DiCamillo has been Managing Partner of Eaglepoint Advisors, a firm led by seasoned CEOs that advises boards, private equity sponsors, and chief executives on strategy, organization, and business transition. The firm emphasizes direct partner involvement rather than junior staff, and works with underperforming or rapidly changing middle-market companies. Over his career he has developed "cut and build" strategies for companies being positioned for sale, including Polaroid, Advantage Resourcing, and Universal Trailer Corp., and drove operational improvement at Culligan, Berkshire Manufactured Products, and Black & Decker.
He has held numerous public-company board seats, including Whirlpool Corporation (director since 1997), 3Com, and Pella Corporation, and has taught as an adjunct lecturer at Babson College. Most relevant to early-growth investing, he was instrumental in the growth and financing of Purple Innovation ahead of its 2018 public offering and currently serves there as Lead Independent Director and Chair of the Nomination & Governance Committee.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Focused on middle-market retail, consumer-goods, and industrial companies facing disruptive innovation, distress, or the need for performance improvement — not classic early-stage tech seed deals.
- Value-add is hands-on operating and governance involvement: strategy alignment, turnarounds, "cut and build" repositioning, and preparing companies for sale or public offering.
- Track record centers on growth financing and pre-IPO value creation, as demonstrated by his role financing and scaling Purple Innovation before its 2018 IPO.
- Eaglepoint's stated approach differs from traditional consultancies by delivering direct senior-partner engagement rather than deploying junior teams.
Notable Investments
- Purple Innovation (Nasdaq: PRPL) — consumer sleep/mattress company; DiCamillo was instrumental in its growth and financing ahead of its 2018 public offering and serves as Lead Independent Director.
- Universal Trailer Corp. — industrial company where he developed a "cut and build" strategy positioning it for sale.
- Polaroid Corporation — as Chairman/CEO, led the instant-imaging company through its digital transition (an operating, not investing, role, but central to his reputation).
- Advantage Resourcing (US & UK) — staffing roll-up he led as President/CEO, growing revenues to ~$1.5 billion.
