Gary Lawson

Gary Lawson is the founder of Tactical Edge Ventures, a defense and dual-use technology strategic advisory firm. Lawson is a former U.S. Marine Corps infantry officer and captain. He is a native of Coronado, California, from a military family, and attended the U.S. Naval Academy, where he earned a B.S. in Honors History in 1997. He later earned both a J.D. from the University of Virginia School of Law and an MBA in accounting and finance from the University of Virginia Darden School of Business, completed concurrently from 2002 to 2006.

After military service and graduate school, Lawson joined Goldman Sachs’ Investment Banking Division, focusing on aerospace and defense, industrials, and natural resources, including metals and mining. He later worked at Macquarie Group and as a senior member of Merrill Lynch’s M&A team, where he continued covering those sectors and broadened into energy, enterprise software, and tech-enabled services.

His later roles include CFO and General Counsel at FlexGen, Chief Restructuring & Growth Officer at Nuru International, co-founder of a stealth-mode startup, and Head of Advisory at ACME General Corp. Tactical Edge says he has completed more than $35 billion in aggregate enterprise-value transaction volume across M&A, IPOs, venture investments, and other private placements, and that he closed a $25 million Series A while CFO of an early-stage energy technology company.
