Background
Gary W. Lisenbee has worked in the investment industry since 1974 and is one of the founding figures behind the Aristotle group of firms. He earned both a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting and a Master of Arts in Economics from California State University, Fullerton. His earlier career included roles as Partner and Research Analyst at Phelps Investment Management; Senior Vice President, Portfolio Manager, and Investment Policy Committee member at Van Deventer & Hoch, Investment Counsel; and Principal, Portfolio Manager, and Investment Policy Committee member at Palley-Needelman Asset Management.
In 1997, Lisenbee co-founded Metropolitan West Capital Management (MWCM) alongside Howard Gleicher and Steve Borowski, serving as its co-founder, CEO, and Chief Investment Officer. When Gleicher and Borowski departed in 2010 to establish Aristotle Capital Management, Lisenbee remained at MWCM, later citing a fiduciary responsibility to clients. After his non-compete agreement expired, he rejoined his former partners at Aristotle in September 2013.
In June 2013, Aristotle Capital announced that Lisenbee would join as Co-Chief Executive Officer and Co-Chief Investment Officer, reuniting the original MWCM founding team. He has since transitioned to Vice Chairman of Aristotle Capital and holds Senior Partner roles across the firm's affiliated entities — Aristotle Credit Partners, Aristotle Atlantic Partners, and Aristotle Boston. Aristotle Capital has grown into a multi-asset manager overseeing roughly $93 billion as of September 2024, following its expansion into credit and fixed income (including the acquisition of Pacific Asset Management) and its rebranding of the Pacific Funds lineup as Aristotle Funds.
Investment Thesis & Focus
*(No publicly stated startup/seed-stage thesis exists for Lisenbee; the "seed round" label in the source record could not be verified.)*
- Practices fundamental, bottom-up value investing in public equities — the core discipline he built at MWCM and carried into Aristotle Capital.
- Focus is on large-cap and small/mid-cap quality-value equities, plus firm-wide exposure to credit and fixed income through Aristotle's affiliates.
- Invests institutional client capital (separately managed accounts, mutual funds, and institutional mandates) — not personal angel checks or venture rounds.
- Emphasis on long-term ownership of high-quality businesses purchased at a discount to intrinsic value, consistent with Aristotle Capital's stated value philosophy.
Notable Investments
- Metropolitan West Capital Management (1997) — co-founded; grew into a respected value-equity boutique before its sale to Wells Fargo Asset Management era ownership.
- Aristotle Capital Management — helped rebuild and scale the firm to ~$93B AUM; served as Co-CEO/Co-CIO and now Vice Chairman.
- Firm-level equity strategies (Value Equity, International Equity, Small/Mid-Cap) hold large-cap public companies; individual portfolio positions are not attributable to Lisenbee personally and are omitted here to avoid misattribution.
