Background
Geir Holmgren is the CEO of Gjensidige Forsikring ASA, a listed Nordic insurance group. Gjensidige’s official management page says he has been CEO since 1 January 2023. The company’s 2022 appointment announcement said he would succeed Helge Leiro Baastad, who had led Gjensidige since 2003.
Before joining Gjensidige, Holmgren spent 25 years at Storebrand ASA. Storebrand and Gjensidige announcements describe him as having held numerous leadership roles there, including Executive Vice President for the corporate market and Managing Director / CEO of Storebrand Livsforsikring. Storebrand announced in August 2012 that Holmgren had been appointed managing director of Storebrand Livsforsikring AS; at that time he had been with Storebrand since 1997 and was chairman of Norsk Pensjon.
Holmgren’s education is in quantitative and business fields. Gjensidige states that he holds a Cand. Scient degree from the University of Oslo and completed a business management programme at Griffith University in Brisbane, Australia. Earlier Storebrand material described his education as an MSc in actuarial science and an MBA.
Outside Gjensidige, Holmgren was elected chair of Finans Norge in March 2024. Finans Norge announced on 28 April 2026 that Inge Reinertsen had replaced him as chair after Holmgren’s two-year maximum term; Holmgren remained listed as a member of Finans Norge’s main board.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- No public source verified Holmgren as a personal angel investor or seed-stage venture investor. Publicly verifiable investment activity is tied to Gjensidige’s corporate strategy, M&A, and Holmgren’s own ownership of Gjensidige shares.
- Gjensidige’s strategic lens under Holmgren is profitable Nordic insurance growth. In 2023 he said the company was “not compromising on our profitability requirements” while raising ambitions for Nordic growth.
- The 2026 Capital Markets Day framed Gjensidige’s priorities as customer empathy, resilience, profitable growth, and sustainability. Holmgren said these priorities guide customer service, organization, capital management, and long-term value creation.
- Strategic acquisitions appear to be favored when they add distribution, customer access, or product depth in insurance markets. The Buysure deal was described as expanding Gjensidige’s footprint in home-transaction insurance and creating cross-selling opportunities.
- Geographic emphasis is Nordic. Gjensidige’s history page says the company agreed in 2024 to sell its Baltic operations to ERGO International and concentrate resources on the Nordic market.
- Technology and customer change are recurring themes. In his 2022 appointment statement, Holmgren pointed to “new customer needs and technological opportunities” in insurance.
