Background

Geoffrey Hamlin is a co-founder and Partner of Cartesian Capital Group, the New York–based private equity firm he helped establish in 2006 alongside Managing Partner Peter Yu. He also serves as the firm's Chief Compliance Officer and is a Managing Member of the firm. Cartesian invests in market-leading companies across emerging markets, drawing its name and ethos from René Descartes' emphasis on "analytical rigor and skepticism." The firm manages more than $3 billion in committed capital across its Pangaea One, Pangaea Two, and Pangaea Three funds and has deployed over $2.5 billion across more than 70 companies in 20+ industries and two dozen countries.

Before co-founding Cartesian, Hamlin was a senior member of the AIG Capital Partners (AIGCP) team, where he led numerous investments across several regions, and previously served as a strategic advisor to Wasserstein Perella Emerging Markets on private equity investments. His earlier career bridged law and international business: from 1994 to 1998 he was Associate General Counsel of COMSAT Corporation, an international communications company, and Chief Counsel of COMSAT International Ventures, which developed, acquired, and managed communications properties in developing markets.

Hamlin began his career as a lawyer, practicing from 1989 to 1994 at Cleary, Gottlieb, Steen & Hamilton, where he focused on international transactions and joint ventures — experience that underpins Cartesian's cross-border, structured-investment approach. He holds a BA from Tufts University and a JD from the University of Texas School of Law.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests in emerging markets with the goal of building or backing market-leading companies, applying what the firm describes as "analytical rigor and skepticism"
  • Operates as an institutional growth-equity / control investor, not an angel or seed investor — typical positions are large equity stakes in scaling businesses
  • Strong track record in multi-unit consumer and franchise platforms (Burger King, Tim Hortons, Popeyes, Sbarro, Arby's master franchises), as well as education, data-center/infrastructure, and financial services
  • Looks for businesses with clear consolidation, roll-out, or expansion runways in under-penetrated markets, then provides growth capital and operational partnership to scale them
  • Increasingly active in public-market / SPAC vehicles (Cartesian Growth Corporation series) to take high-growth and technology businesses public

Notable Investments

  • Burger King China (BK China) — Held exclusive 20-year master franchise rights for mainland China; Cartesian financed growth from 56 restaurants to more than 1,300
  • Tim Hortons China — Co-investment to build out the coffee chain across China (announced new partners, 2021)
  • TAB Gida (Turkey) — Master franchisee for Burger King, Popeyes, Sbarro and Arby's, operating 750+ restaurants including ~500 Burger Kings
  • Ser Educacional (Brazil) — Backed an acquisition strategy that made it one of the largest for-profit universities in northeast Brazil
  • redIT (Mexico) — Second-largest independent data-center operator in Mexico, with operations in California, Arizona and Texas
  • Flybondi (Argentina) — Low-cost airline; Cartesian exited the position on June 19, 2025
  • Factorial Energy — Solid-state battery company entering a December 2025 business combination with Cartesian Growth Corporation III (Nasdaq: CGCT) at ~$1.1B pre-money valuation
  • Townhouse — Consumer (B2C non-financial) services investment, reported March 2026
