Background
Geoffrey Mellor (born September 1964; British) is an actuary by profession who spent his career in UK pensions management. Before joining Coal Pension Trustees, he was pensions director of the £1.2bn Whitbread PLC Group Pension Fund. He joined Coal Pension Trustees Services Limited on 1 May 2007 as Chief Executive Officer Designate and took over as full CEO from David Morgan in the summer of 2007, leading a staff of around 30.
As CEO, Mellor headed the executive arm responsible for the UK's coal-industry pension schemes — collectively worth roughly £25bn at the time of his appointment. These comprised the British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme (BCSSS, c. £11.9bn, ~65,000 former managerial and clerical members), the Mineworkers' Pension Scheme (MPS, c. £13bn, ~192,000 pensioners), and the smaller Industry-Wide Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme (~£194m) and Industry-Wide Mineworkers' Pension Scheme (~£227m). A distinctive feature of these schemes is their guarantee relationship with the UK government, which Mellor noted set the role apart from his prior work.
Over his 17-year tenure he held numerous associated directorships across the CPT group, including Coal Pension Trustees Investment Limited (2010–2024), Globe Investments (U.K.) Limited, Coal Pension (Securities) Nominees Limited, and various BCSSS/MPS investment holding entities (2018–2022). All were resigned around his retirement.
Mellor retired as CEO of CPT on 31 March 2024, with Dan Whincup having been appointed Chief Executive from 1 January 2024. In June 2024 he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the King's Birthday Honours for services to British Coal Pensioners.
Investment Thesis & Focus
- Institutional, liability-driven investing on behalf of defined-benefit pension schemes — long horizon, diversified across public equities, fixed income, real estate, and private markets — rather than venture/angel investing.
- Stewardship of government-guaranteed coal-industry schemes, where prudent funding, member security, and the scheme–government relationship shape strategy.
- No publicly documented personal angel/seed thesis, check size, or startup-focused mandate exists for Mellor; the "Angel / Seed" framing in the source stub appears to be a mis-categorisation.
Notable Investments
- British Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme (BCSSS) — ~£11.9bn scheme for former managerial/clerical coal staff.
- Mineworkers' Pension Scheme (MPS) — ~£13bn scheme serving ~192,000 pensioners.
- Industry-Wide Coal Staff Superannuation Scheme — ~£194m.
- Industry-Wide Mineworkers' Pension Scheme — ~£227m.
- No individual company or startup investments are attributable to Mellor personally in available sources.
