Background

George Gong is a technology entrepreneur and venture investor with more than three decades of international business experience. He co-founded Beyondsoft, an IT services company that Harvard’s Advanced Leadership Initiative describes as having grown from a four-person startup into a multinational enterprise with more than 30,000 employees. Earlier public Beyondsoft material also identifies him as Vice President of Beyondsoft and head of Beyondsoft Japan in 2007.

After Beyondsoft, Gong became active in cross-border venture investing. He is associated with Jubilee Capital Management in Singapore, where he is listed as a founding/managing director or managing partner, and with Zino Ventures in New Zealand, which he founded/chairs. Zino describes itself as launched in 2016 to help New Zealand technology-based companies expand into global and Chinese-speaking markets.

In the U.S., Gong is CEO and Managing Partner of KungHo Fund, the U.S. investment arm of Zino Ventures. KungHo began operations in June 2022 and is headquartered in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The fund invests in U.S.-focused technology startups, particularly companies using AI, cloud computing, and big-data technologies.

Gong is also a 2026 Fellow at Harvard’s Advanced Leadership Initiative. Harvard’s profile says he has served on boards including Callaghan Innovation in New Zealand and MassChallenge in Boston, mentors entrepreneurs through Harvard Business School, MIT, and Northeastern University programs, and leads a charitable foundation focused on education access in rural China.

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • KungHo Fund invests in “global tech start-ups from anywhere in the world who aim to expand in the U.S. market.”
  • Gong described KungHo’s thesis as: “This new Boston-based fund helps E-commerce, edtech, and biotech startups expand their business in the US market... We’re primarily looking to invest in startups in AI, cloud computing, and big-data technology.”
  • KungHo’s stated fund criteria include angel/seed investments, post-revenue companies, and checks starting at $250K with an average of $1M per startup.
  • Current KungHo focus areas listed on its site are AI infrastructure and tools, generative AI and content, vertical AI applications, and robotics/autonomous systems.
  • Zino Growth Fund’s thesis is to “deliver superior investor returns by taking great NZ companies to the Chinese speaking markets,” investing $1M-$2M in New Zealand-domiciled expansion-stage companies, generally Series A and B.
  • Gong appears to value direct founder engagement: KungHo says its approach is “person-to-person, investor-to-entrepreneur,” getting to know entrepreneurs well before investing rather than relying only on financial reports.
  • Cross-border expansion is a recurring theme across Gong’s platforms: Zino focuses on New Zealand-to-China/Chinese-speaking markets, while KungHo focuses on U.S. market expansion.
