Background

Gerald "Jerry" Grinstein is a longtime American transportation executive and Seattle-based investor. Born in 1932, he is a native of the Seattle area. He earned a BA from Yale University (1954) and a JD from Harvard Law School (1957). He began his career in Washington, D.C., serving as an administrative assistant to U.S. Senator Warren G. Magnuson, then as counsel to the Merchant Marine & Transportation Subcommittee and chief counsel to the U.S. Senate Commerce Committee, before entering private practice as a partner at the Seattle law firm Preston, Torgrimson, Ellis & Hollman.

Grinstein went on to lead several of the largest transportation companies in the country. He was Chairman and CEO of Western Airlines, which he steered into a 1987 merger with Delta Air Lines — earning him a seat on Delta's board. He then served as Chairman and CEO of Burlington Northern Inc., overseeing the 1995 combination with Santa Fe Pacific to create BNSF, the nation's largest railroad, and was named Railroader of the Year in 1996. In 2004, amid a severe financial crisis, he came out of a quasi-retirement to become CEO of Delta Air Lines, guiding the carrier through its 2005 Chapter 11 bankruptcy and a sweeping restructuring before retiring in the summer of 2007, when he was succeeded by Richard Anderson.

Alongside his operating career, Grinstein helped co-found Madrona Investment Group in the 1990s, a Seattle private investment company that became one of the region's premier early-stage technology investors and gave rise to the Madrona Venture Group fund. He returned to Madrona as a Strategic Director after leaving Delta in 2007. He has also served as non-executive chairman of Agilent Technologies and as a board member of Expedia and the William D. Ruckelshaus Center. He resides in Medina, Washington.

*Note: The source record associates Grinstein with "Riker Capital," a Chicago-based private equity firm. No public source connects the well-documented Gerald Grinstein (Madrona / former Delta CEO) to Riker Capital, so that affiliation could not be verified; his verifiable investment vehicle is Madrona.*

Investment Thesis & Focus

  • Invests through Madrona in early-stage / seed technology companies, with a strong bias toward the Pacific Northwest / Seattle startup ecosystem.
  • Brings a large-company operator's lens — decades running airlines and railroads through mergers, restructurings, and turnarounds — to founder mentoring and board governance.
  • Stated pitch to founders reflects his regional focus: *"Start a company in the Pacific Northwest. Then you get to live here."*
  • Values durable operating fundamentals and disciplined restructuring — the same playbook that carried Delta through bankruptcy — over hype.

Notable Investments

  • Madrona Investment Group / Madrona Venture Group — co-founder; the firm became an early and influential backer of Seattle-area technology companies.
  • Expedia — served on the board of the online travel company as a Madrona-linked director.
  • Agilent Technologies — non-executive chairman (board leadership rather than a venture stake).
